The Government of Nepal announced an infrastructure development plan in August 2014 that will join the Lukla to Kathmandu by opening the first tarmac road.


All about Lukla: The gateway to Himalaya

Lukla is considered as the gateway to Everest region of the Himalayas. It is the destination where the real journey of all the mountaineer begins exploring the Everest region. This remote town in Khumbu area lies in the Solukhumbu district of north-eastern Nepal in the Sagarmatha Zone. It lies in the elevation of 2,860 meters (9,383 ft) above sea level.
The word "Lukla" means the land of sheep and goats. But the meaning doesn't matches with the place these days as very few numbers of such pets are found compared to past.
You can reach Namche Bazaar from there in two days of hiking. This is the starting point of the Khumbu region and is such a remote place that no other transportation means except airways are available. The massive popularity and fewer transportation alternatives have turned the Lukla Airport as one of the busiest domestic airports in Nepal.

The History of Lukla Airport

Though you might have made the journey from Kathmandu to Lukla flight, you may be unknown to the history of the Lukla Airport. It was built under the supervision of Sir Edmund Hillary in 1964. The airport was renamed in honor of the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest i.e. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. Hence, it is also popular by the name Tenzing–Hillary Airport.


Climatic Condition at Lukla Airport

Lukla lies in the mountain region of Nepal in Sagarmatha zone which normally remains cold throughout the year. Wondering, what's the best time to head towards the beautiful land? According to past climatic records, the month of April, May June, July, August and September are hot compared to the rest period of the year. There are more chances of rainfall during the month of June, July, August and very less in September. During those rainy months, it is not suggested yo make your journey for the trek. July and December are considered as the wettest and driest month respectively. Throughout the year, the maximum temperature that the location bears is between 30 °C to 33 °C whereas the lowest temperature is 2 °C to 3 °C.


Cost and Expenses

Lukla is one of the tourist destinations of the country. Therefore, the charges of living, booking hotels, food, accommodation, fees for the guide and other expenses are somehow expensive than other normal regions of the country. However, the amount necessary to be spent over there is not a big deal if compared to other parts of European and Western countries.
A budget hotel room cost USD 15 per day in an average whereas luxury hotels may charge USD 150 or above as well. If you're hiring a guide to assist and accompany your journey, you need to pay USD 20 to USD per day 30 which include his food and accommodation cost.
