Situated at a height of 6,187m, Island Peak (also known as Imja Tse) is a popular adventure travel package in Nepal that combines a couple of unique aspects of trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp along with the Island Peak summit. The whole trek takes place within the beautiful Everest region and the trek is best suited for those looking for more thrilling adventure than just trekking. Climbing Mount Everest can be a daunting task and the cost of climbing Mount Everest is pretty steep as well but climbing Island Peak might suffice your hunger for peak climbing in the Himalayas as the cost is much more affordable and can be done by anyone with a little bit of practice and enthusiasm. If what you're seeking is to widen your experience towards peak climbing expeditions beyond simply trekking in Nepal then this might be the right option for you.

The expedition is led by well-experienced Sherpa climbers. Travelers will be briefed about the journey and various aspects of climbing techniques after their arrival at Kathmandu and they'll be introduced to their fellow guides and climbing experts. The island peak climbing trip starts with a scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. During this trek in Nepal, we can see the panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges such as Mt Everest (8,848m), Mt Lhotse (8,749m), Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), Labuche (6,119), Thamserku (6,608m), Kangtega (6,685m), Pumo Ri (7,165m), and Island peak (6,189m) from different angles.

We first reach the Everest Base Camp, the foothills of Mount Everest, and the closest we can get to Mount Everest without any special permit. After accomplishing one of the two challenges we then head towards the second challenge, the Island Peak summit. Surrounded by the glaciers, the Island Peak looks like an island and hence the name. This is the place where you'll be guided by the best professional Sherpas to make your way to the top of the peak from where amazing views of the surrounding Himalayas can be seen. It is truly a special place to be where travelers can immerse themselves in the accomplishment of reaching the summit.

The journey however is not only about the mountains. The unique culture and Sherpa settlement of the Khumbu region are other aspects of what sets this place apart. The beautiful Himalayan people and their hospitable culture will surely warm the hearts of any travelers. We will be passing through many Sherpa villages such as Namche, Tehgboche, Pangpoche, and many more. There are also monasteries and gumbas along the way which is something you won't get to see over other places in the world. Keep in mind that this Everest expedition requires a group of two or more people for the trek. The journey truly is thrilling and challenging but it is an accomplishment afterwards

On the way, there will bridges to cross, several of them suspension, including the popular Hillary Suspension Bridge, named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the one of the first persons to top Mount Everest. These bridges are not just landmarks but magnificently built constructs that link us to the awesome natural features around the world.

Namche Bazar

Our route takes us to the town of Namche Bazaar, which is also known as a gateway for the Everest Regions trading center. This intersection of history thrives today as a center of trade activities, the meeting point of Nepalese and Tibetan traders that existed a long time ago. From what used to be a simple village life now is thriving in Namche Bazaar with a variety of hotels, pubs, restaurants, and internet cafes. Allow yourself to be submerged in local culture, take delight in exquisite gastronomy and bask in the splendor which this Himalayan town offers you.

As we navigate through Namche Bazaar, we are enchanted by the mixture of old and new elements: the latter enhances our trekking experience. Such an event trains our bodies and allows us to adapt gradually; resulting in safer and more enjoyable trekking trail.

Syangboche airstrip

Syangboche is also renowned as the area with the highest airport altitude in the world. From this impressive vantage point we are granted with an amazing landscape view of the grand Bulgarian Mountains. Behold with your eyes the awe-inspiring sights of Mt. Everest (8848.86m), Mt. Day 06

Namche Bazzar to Tengboche

As soon as we begin the trek towards Tengboche we can see the narrow trails we have to pass by which run along the banks of the Dudh Koshi river plying the amazing sights of the magnificent Himalayan range. The trip flows logically from begining to end as the route is consistently and smoothly level without any steep ascents and descents. Thus, we are able to sometimes forget that we are on a hike and just concentrate on nature around us.

On our arrival in Tengboche we encounter a shrine that is of a high priority to the people of the Everest region; the Tengboche Monastery. Our tour starts in the main hall decorated with fine textile pieces, an authentic reflection of the rich cultural traditions of this region, where we gather the first glance of a stunning 20-foot Buddha statue. The live symphony of the monks' morals and culture presents itself, as we hear the musical instruments and see the Lamas' robes, and the spiritual legacy of the monastery deepens.

Daily prayer ceremonies are carried out within the monks' community playing the role of a splendid manifestation of the spirituality that consumes this sacred place. During our trekking, our group will get a chance to watch the sunrise up close in the morning or the sunset outside in the evening, we will choose the one depending on the daily trekking schedule. In taking this moment of prayer with the local community, we will be part of a changeless tradition that links us to the very heart and soul of the Everest region.

You will be captivated by the road to Tengboche where nature’s canvas and religion’s canvas form a masterpiece that goes beyond the ordinary. Island Peak Summit and return to Chukung

Finally, the sunny day we have all been waiting for arrived! At about 1 am in the night, we will take our precautions before undertaking the thrilling climb. Outfitted with headlamps to illuminate the way, timing counts as we start the challenging task of ascending toward the enormous stone field. Climbing ridges and glaciers, and even the winding crevasses we are higher up on the slope, that unbroken snow of the plateau is all around us.

And as we keep the journey we use the rope to climb, normally 300m long. The trek to the peak may demand all our power and patience, though, by our effort, we may understand that this is not just an ordinary trip, it is something special and too meaningful to forget. Day 14

Chukung to Tengboche

The breath-taking scenery of Island Peak will soon be our memories as we start our descend back to the path we passed earlier. The trip back to the Tengboche village, which is a place of familiarity and nostalgia, also remind me of our responsibility as humans. The middle part of the trail is where it becomes easier because of the bit decrease in elevation.

With every step, we are surrounded by the tranquil show-stopping fiber of the Himalayas, keeping hold of the memories which make the journey a memory. Although the sights unfamiliar and the sounds are different, the trail remains a comforting reminding of the incredible journey that we have experienced.

As our journey further takes us so down, we can think of the difficulties we’ve been through and the personal development we’ve achieved. The trail is easy to handle that we can enjoy the surroundings, the sights even more, with a newfound amazement.

As for Tengboche, this is where the benign cauters of this world rested its eye, with its famous monastery and what many fondly called, tranquil atmosphere. This is the point where we are able to think at the marvelous journey that we stepped into, full of the ethereal atmosphere present in such a holly place.

The journey is drawing to a close, but the remembrances and adventures we have experienced will be with us forever. We have this satisfied feeling inside us when we are going back to Tengboche that we may not have enough words to describe the beauty of this part of the world.

Day 15

Tengboche to Namche

Another road trip that follows is the journey dominated by downhill slope and brings us to the Namche Bazaar, the most populated trading center in this region. As we go deeper, the pressure on our legs gets relieved, hence, allowing us to experience the attractiveness of the scenery in a more light hearted way.

On our arrival at Namche, we get the chance to unload our backpacks, therefore taking away the very weight that had tailed us. It's a justifiable break away from work, and we can fully enjoy the nice luxuries of Namche.

The vibrant streets of Namche Bazaar beckon us to walk their market trails where each supreme turn unravels new discoveries of local handicraft, tasty delicacy and fellow voyageurs. Our wonderful destination, which is situated between the Himalayan mountains, is the greatest place to relax and have moments for yourself to look back on the amazing trip we have had.

Slowly but surely the bitterness of the cold is taking over and finally melting away in the blazing heat. We have a chance to relax, take a break, and totally lose ourselves in the festive mood of Namche. Regardless of whether it is the walk through the neighborhoods, having a cup of local tea in a relaxed local café, or just gazing over the town from the heights, Namche Bazaar will give us a pause and we can refresh ourselves before breathing again the air of the valley.

In the village of Namche we see a place where the modern day comforts and the traditional beauty are blended together. Thus, we find the idea of 'the best of both worlds'. It's a haven where restoring our strength, reminiscing about the best moments of our hike and building up the fortitude to complete the last part of our journey are we do.

We round of our journey in the Everest Region at Namche Bazaar, which is a fitting end with its distinct culture, beauty of nature and the warmth of the hospitality.

Day 16

Namche Bazzar to Lukla

Lukla to Namche Bazaar is the same trail, and our return is the same route we came ascending. But this time the trip, as it is actually characterized by a gradual downhill and a lower high altitude, is more gentle and comfortable to walk on.

Along the way, both on ridges and on downhill, we have the freedom to reflect on the difficulty of the trail, the beauty of the viewed landscapes, and the friendship that was established. This is time of relaxation and celebration, when we indulge into joy of having finished this great mission.

On arrival at Lukla the atmosphere was borne with a feeling of victory. We can just accept the fact that we can have some moments when we can breathe, have some happy thoughts of our successful expedition, and meet up with our fellow trekkers to crack jokes and have interesting conversations. The trip stretched our strength and casts a new meaning to the art of giving up. We have triumphed at last.

We meet warmth and the joy of home wherever we visit Lukla. The town serves as the right setting for reflection, and the many changes we have made and the memories we have created through our journey start to sink in.

At the end of the journey, we can congratulate ourselves on the courage and resilience that enabled us to triumph on such a daunting trip. Whether it be raising a toast to our accomplishments as a group, exchanging fond farewells with our newfound friends, or simply taking some time to appreciate just how peaceful Lukla can be-we will be able to reminisce in the journey’s successful completion.

To us, the path from Namche Bazaar to Lukla was not only the end of the physical trek but also the reminder of all the personal transformations and lifetime memories we encountered along the three weeks statement.

Day 17

Lukla to Kathmandu

The final leg of our journey commences from a very early morning flight from Lukla, Kathmandu is our destination. Often reserved for the first hours of the morning, the last in the 35-minute ride is the last mention of our trekking expedition. The landscape of the Himalayas was breathtaking as we boarded the plane . We can conclude that we have been through an incredible experience and have gained valuable knowledge and experience during these weeks.

The flight from Lukla to Kathmandu is a final chance to see once again this enchanting picture from a new angle. As we find our way back to the ground, surrounded by soaring clouds, we would get the chance to reflect on the number of obstacles that were overcome, the beautiful panoramas that were seen, and the transformation that occurred during the hike.

As we are getting off the plane at Kathmandu, our team will be already waiting for us there waiting to lead us back to the hotel to where we started. This is a feeling of both a rose-tinted view and of relaxation, as we come back to the place of the routine and calm down after the uprushing fume of emotions during our exciting journey.

In the evening, one finds themselves with the perfect opportunity for reflection on our accomplishments, storytelling with fellow trekkers, and enjoying authentic Nepalese cuisine. The pleasure of completion and success makes the trek much more than just an activity, and we can also take pride in having finished it.

But as we sneak into our rooms for the night, we can just breathe out in relief, completely satisfied with what we have been through, the memories we have made and the mountain beauty that we have witnessed. End of trek does not finish the spirit of adventure and the transformative experiences but those live on.

The Island Peak expedition terrorizes a climber not only by being a technical climb but also treats them to magnificent views in the Khumbu region of the Himalayas. From its location in the village of Dingboche, the characteristic peak of Island Peak is visible, often with an ice or rock background. Its name given by Eric Shipton typifies the nature of this particular feature – it looks like an island amidst a sea of ice. The mountains form the southern ridge of Lhotse Shar and the regional col joins them to form the ridge that leads to the summit of Island Peak.

Imja Tse/Island Peak (Khumbu Himal, Nepal)

To arrive at the top, the ascent trails the gorgeous Chukkung Valley and Base Camp from which the final climb takes between 9 to 12 hours depending on the weather. The rugged trails are steep with sections of rock scrambling and rope teams crossing the glacier and getting to the spine of the ridge situated over the crevasse-filled traversing terrain, a wall of 300 meters in height. We have fixed ropes on the headwall to give support to climbers and this climber’s life line extends to about 300 m. While it is not steep, the fact that it is a narrow ridge should be remembered. The summit itself is smaller, to serve only a rare group of climbers at an instance.

Having scaled the 300-meter headwall and the subjected summit ridge, the familiar chill of high altitude sets in the body, giving climbers the elation of Himalayan mountaineering. The vista reached from the summit, indeed, is grandiose, and the view seems to offer a 360-degree vision of some of the highest peaks in the world. The massive Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) form a semicircle to the north of us. The scenery is completed by the magnificent views of the peaks Kangchenjunga, Chokrin (8,585m) to the north, as well as Makalu (8,475m) to the east, and Baruntse and Ama Dablam to the south.

Moving towards the Island Peak Expedition requires to be going on the diverse terrains that need to be dealt with by the use of cautious navigation and technical skills. The start of the journey is along the similar pattern to the Everest Base Camp trek considering the rough and irregular terrain. But all the tests come to the play when you have entered the mountain.

Just beyond the horizon of the shadows you will encounter steep scrambling sections on loose rocks, that ends when snow line is reached, wich is referred as “crampon point”. It is this phase that demands a hands on help and mountain climbers navigate a circuitous path through scree and rock formations. Moving along the process, the view keeps changing into snow-covered plains, where rope parties of three to four walk through multiple crevasses. Vigilance is the most important factor in order to remain away from critical slots or crevasses.

At the base of the headwall and having reached the fixed lines, you should carefully inspect the latter before going further. Anchors are usually safe and placed at the proper spacing, but they will become loose after the morning hours. On the climbing part, it's mostly 40-degree slopes and very frequent stop overs to check equipment and your technique. It is worth mentioning that having other climbing teams around can slow down the process, hence, coordination and clear communication becomes a must.

Finally, the path becomes narrow, exposed with a dangerous drop, and often busy when you reach the summit ridge. The simple one cable steadies to the peak, where only a handful could accomodate at any time. The need of negotiating between fellow climber becomes very important, particularly during the climbing of steeper and exposed routes. To prioritize safety, clip the safety karabiner on the anchor before proceeding to the jumar, while the second karabiner should stay at this point to make sure you know you are secured to the rope.

The descent, however, is even more dangerous as extra mindfulness is needed when abseiling the initial pendulum from the summit ridge. For the pros, it is probably a piece of cake, using the supports on the platforms to help them proceed. On the other hand, those with less experience in abseiling may need more time that this could result in slowed proceedings. Overtaking may, occasionally be possible, but it is especially cumbersome, especially when time is running short.

Back in the glacier, modifying light conditions make advance vigilance a necessity. Snow goes on compaction of a lesser extent, and the ladders have probably shifted as well. Safely rappelling down requires not only keeping the man ropes taut but also sticking to the sound rules of climbing throughout the descent. By respecting the official route, a safe return from that awesome excursion is assured.

The Island Peak trek will see the accommodation offered in nice lodges run by the locals, the tents may be preferred if mentions about it. In addition, each lodge also has a communal area with a stove, and the bedrooms are comprised of 2 beds with mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Yet, however, the rooms are unfurnished, so you should have suitable sleeping bags with you for the purpose of warmth. Most lodges have gas heaters in the showers and better still; the "drop" toilets have been upgraded to flush system toilets.

During the trek, you can enjoy variety of delicious food that is the course of both the local Nepali/Sherpa cuisine and the Western recipes. You can enjoy a diversity of meals, including burgers and chips, to dal bhat with rice, one of the best-known Nepali dishes. The pastries, drinks, and snacks are explored along the trail at the lodges and shops. The range of the items includes pastries, beverages, sweets, and chocolates. However, we shouldn't forget that it might be very difficult to eat a healthy diet due to the fact that so many tempting things are all around us. However, it is good to limit yourself with a diet of rice and dal.

The tented camps will be put up at Island Peak Base Camp. You will have two-person tents, equipped with trekking poles for easy set-up and takedown of your tent. Remember to have a 4-season sleeping bag and the best sleeping mats at your disposal for better comfort. For the lower altitudes, you might opt for just a sleeping bag liner which prevents hikers being cold when sleeping in the open 4-season bag without overheating.

The porters will take your main bag, with a weight limit of 15 kilograms, so that all the team's needs are met. The team's requirements will be double-checked by me. Your well-being and safety will at all times be ensured by an experienced guide and a climbing guide who will be on your side all throughout your hike.

Before we go to the Island Peak expedition, we must have winter climbing experience at least first. Being able to tie into a harness and onto a man rope, used for anchoring, is also essential. Safety is a must when we walk on glacial ground and tied up together. Yet, prior experience is an absolute must. Sharing your experience level with your guide is of great significance because they will teach you and guide you depending on how much experience you have.

You will find rope ascending device ( jumar, also known as 'cow's tail') along the headwall of Island peak and descender for abseiling back down. This is probably not the best site where one would abseil for the first time, thus, it is recommended to receive training and practice beforehand. The abseil is being done on a single line and there’s absolutely no rope lets you down (or support ) in any way. The top rope for this part is not viable unless there is nothing else to do because of time limitations.

Those crevasses on the route are not huge and not so wide for crossing, but ladders may be hard for some to cross. installed slip-resistant handrails on poles, but they were still difficult. The recommended tactic is to climb across the rungs with the metal tips of the crampons facing down the ladders, while others may find crawling more effective.

The headwall of Island Peak may seem taller from a distance or front on, but once on it, you will know of enough resting spot and wide ledges. It seems less steep and not as difficult as it is perceived. While numerous climbers prefer to go up by "jugging" along the ropes via their jumars, which are used to pull themselves, and essentially, their weight, up as the ropes act as suspension. But multiple people being on a single rope could be they just dangerous. It is a possibility that an anchor can be in place for a few days or so, hence, you should never trust an anchor not until you have personally set it up or you have seen the position with your own eyes. It is recommended to use your crampons and axe to climb with rope protection instead of trusting it all on the rope.

Thr safety aspect of summit of Island Peak is critical, as it is very exposed with steep drops on either side. Concentration as well as mental toughness are desirable. People who have Vertigo or discomfort on steep drops may find this part difficult. Take a ridge hike and develop the correct mindset through knowing how to use crampons or an axe correctly. This is not the best place to take your first trip with it. This level should be an individual effort since the guides will either be in front or behind though at the back of the rope. Learning how to traverse your prusik knot around a rock anchor in safe manner is top priority, and of course, never forgetting to clip in is a must!

While Island Peak climbing is indeed not considered the easiest peak climb, it is still relatively easier than other peak climbs in the Everest Region. Nevertheless, it does require high technical skill and the difficulty of ascent. Let us look at the different levels of difficulty in climbing Island Peak,

Suitable for Advanced Beginners

Isolated by the weather, there are a few mountain destinations in the world that significantly resemble tropical islands, and among them, Nepal's Island Peak is the one we highly recommend, though not for every beginner. It is possible for intermediate level learners who have a clear vision of the climbing gears. The tech part of the climb will be a bit tricky if you don’t have any prior knowledge and experience.

Altitude Sickness

Climbing the 6189 metres of Island Peak also includes a considerable altitude gain which increases the risk of altitude sickness. Previous author: Fassili Abdulahim A two-day itinerary of acclimatization though helps in lowering the chances of altitude sickness still there is a possibility of its symptoms due to the abrupt altitude difference.

Weather Conditions:

Weather factors come to complicate the experience and the technics of climbing. The unpredictable weather at high altitudes can be a real surprise. It is strongly advised to begin the climb as early as possible to avoid noontime when strong winds could make the ascend very challenging.

Technical Aspects

Although Island Peak is regarded as less technical, therefore, it still includes sections where climbers have to engage in some level of climbing expertise. Experienced intermediate climbers with the basic knowledge of the climbing gear may successfully handle those sections with the guidance of professional guides. However, these technical sections may be hard to comprehend by beginners who previously made no attempts.

Trekking Routes

The trekker on the course of the popular Everest Base Camp Trek route leads to the summit of the Island Peak. Hiking time for a day's average varies from 7 to 8 hours, i could be 9-10 hours for some days. At places the trail covers magnificent sections, but the further you deviate from the Everest Basecamp Trekking route, the more difficult the terrain becomes and it has very steep uphill climbs.

In short, Island Peak climbing is not a very hard venture among the mountains in this area but it involves some degree of difficulty. With the minimum level of rock climbing experience/technical skills and gear competence it is required. It is necessary to pay attention to the effects of altitude on health, weather conditions, technical details, and tough trekking paths when evaluating the difficulty of the expedition.

The best period for Island Peak trekking in Nepal is the spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) periods. During this period the most attractive weather and the best conditions for climbing are.

Spring (April and May):
The weather becomes stable during spring as the warm-up begins. The days are prolonged making it quite possible to go high for good many hours. The skies are generally sunny, providing inspiring views of Ancone Mountain and the surrounding hills. In addition, be ready for the colder temperatures that may be experienced at the higher altitudes and the risk of having occasional showers.

Autumn (September and October):
Autumn is a massively targeted season for Island Peak climbing. The climate is usually dry and stable which provides with clear skies and nice temperatures. The autumn months are good time with great view and good conditions for climbing. The climbing season is considered as the most popular time to trek and climb in Nepal and you are more likely to meet more crowds on the most popular routes.

Spring as well as autumn furnish the most favourable condition for the mountaineering to Mount Island in terms of fairly stable weather, clear skies and bearable temperature. It is worth mentioning that the weather may have changes, and you should consult a local agency or en experienced guide for the most current weather reports and in this manner set up your climbing in a proper manner.

Have been planning the Everest summit for the last few years. I finally had time to fly out to Nepal and trek to the world’s tallest mountain, the Everest. It is surprising that Nepal has way more to offer than just the landscapes.

The cuisine of Nepal is really delicious. You might find it spicier but that’s the way to go for me. Talking about the trekking itself.

It was fairly challenging but CoreTreks and the guiding team helped me through it. That is why recommend CoreTreks if you are looking for future trip to the mountains.

It was one hell of a trekking and climbing. We completed the trek with Atma Ram Bhatta and Narendra Bhatta who were both helpful and hardworking individuals from CoreTreks.

Nepalese people are very kind and that filled my heart with joy as we continued to hike up through local Sherpa Settlements.

I would suggest the team to consider more comfortable transportation means as some of them were somewhat uncomfortable. Besides that, love the trip, love Nepal, will definitely visit again.
