Makalu base camp trek is an exclusive adventure tours, the experienced trekkers who would like to venture deep into the high Himalayas can take the Makalu base camp trek. Makalu base camp is culturally and environmentally diverse region among the other trekking regions in Nepal. The trek to Makalu base camp is an exciting camping trek into a remote and fairly inaccessible region where few trekkers have ventured. Both of the river valleys Arun and Barun lead to Makalu base camp exploring variety of flora, fauna and geographic diversity. The scenic beauty of the surroundings cannot be described in words.
Makalu base camp trek is a strenuous trek into the remote north east of Nepal, full of adventure and challenges. We start walking after landing at the airstrip of Tumblingstar the trekkers proceed to Arun River valley and then to Num. After crossing Shipton La 4125m they reach to Kalo Pokhari, Barun river valley and get the close view of Makalu as well as Chamlang Himal. Makalu base camp trek takes the trekkers to the most remote part of Nepal. We have a full day to explore the area around the trip of the Barun Glacier. From a view point above base camp we get breathtaking views of the highest mountains in the world. Everest 8850m, Lhotse 8516m, Makalu 8465m, Chamlang 7319, and Baruntse 7220m.
            The 21 days Makalu base trek is an ideal choice for keen trekkers and nature enthusiasts who seek adventurous trek. The best seasons to trek Makalu base camp trek are March to May and September to November are the best months for this Makalu base camp trek. Although Makalu base camp trip can be taken during winter season also, but the cold temperature might be suitable for everyone.
            The Makalu base camp trek is diversity at its best. This single trek passes through distinct vegetation zones including sub-tropical jungles at low altitudes, sub-alpine valleys with forests of fir, birch and rhododendron and high alpine zone with herbs, grasses and juniper shrubs and pastures. Makalu conservation area is known for its uncountable species of flowering plants, birds and animals. The Rai, Limbu and Newar ethnic groups dominate the lower altitudes, whereas the Sherpas live in the higher altitude.
 
Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Tribhuvan international airport (1300m.) Overnight at Hotel.

Day 02: Kathmandu valley sightseeing and trek preparation (1,300m) overnight at Hotel.

Day 03: Fly Kathmandu – Tumlingtar (460m) and drive to Num (1490m) by private jeep. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 04: Num to Sedua (1460m) 5-6 hours. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 05: Sedua to Tashigoun (2070m) 6-7 hours. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 06: Tashigoun to Kauma (3476m) 6 hours. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 07: Kauma to Mumbuk (3570m) 6-7 hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 08: Mumbuk to Nhe Kharka (3000m) 6- 7 hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 09: Nhe Kharka to Sherson (4615m) 6-7 hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 10: Sherson  to Makalu base camp (5000m) 5-6 hours. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 11: Explore Makalu Base camp, Overnight at tented camp.

Day 12: Makalu Base camp  to Nhe Kharka (3000m) 6-7 hours Overnight at tented camp.

Day 13: Nhe Kharka to Mumbuk(3570m) 5-6 hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 14: Mumbuk to Kauma (3470m) 6-7 hours . Overnight at tented camp.

Day 15: Kauma to Tashi Gaon(2070m) 6-7 hours, Overnight at tented camp.

Day 16: Tashi Gaon to Balung (760m)5-6 hours.  Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 17: Balung  to Pukuwa (550m) 6- 7hrs, Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 18: Pukuwa  to Bumling (370m) 6hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
 Day 19: Bumling to tumlingtar (460m) 5-6 hours. Overnight at tented camp.
 
Day 20: Fly back to Kathmandu , overnight at Hotel.
 
Day 21: Departure.

DETAILS ITINERARY

Day 1

​Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Kathmandu

You are welcomed to our country Nepal. Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport our representative member will receive you and bring up to the hotel. In the evening our core trek office will offer you as a welcome dinner in Nepalese restaurant with Nepalese food. Overnight at Hotel. (Meal Included: Dinner)

Day 2

​Kathmandu valley sightseeing tour & Trek preparation.

Today, we will go for sightseeing of world heritage sites in Kathmandu valley including, Kathmandu Durbar, Swayambhunath temple, Boudhanath stupa and Pashupatinath temple. After short sightseeing return back to the hotel. Overnight at Hotel. (Meal Included: Breakfast)

Day 3

​Fly Kathmandu – Tumlingtar (460m) and drive to Num (1490m) by private jeep.

Today morning our guide will take you to the airport to take a flight to Tumlingtar overlooking range of snowcapped peaks from langtang all the way to Mt.Everest, Makalu and Mt.Kanchenjunga. On arrival at Tumlingtar airport which is a village town located above the Arun River, after reaching at Tumlingtar we take a jeep to Num passing through Haruru. Overnight at tented Camp, (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner).

Day 4

​Num to Sedua (1460m) 5-6 hours.

Our trail takes descending steeply from Num through corn fields of Lumbang, below the village the nail drops very steeply passing through a jungle to a suspension bridge over the Arun River. After crossing the bridge we climb steeply to a primitive tea shop, then passing through corn and bucket wheat field.  Walking along the rocky path and small terraces planted with corn and barley. After walking rough climb we reach to Sedua. Overnight at tented Camp, (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner).

Day 5

​Sedua to Tashigoun (2070m) 6-7 hours.

We move towards to Tashigoun from Sedua. We make a gradual climb high above the Kasuwa khola to Gyang. After passing the school at Gyang, we need to walk gently through terraced fields and forested areas to Hindrungma village. We need to cross meadows and many streams, and then climb to the Sherpa village of Tashigoun. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
 

Day 6

​Tashigoun to Kauma (3476m) 6 hours.

At first our route climbs over the ridge and ascends through forests to a stream and onto a ridge where we can found here a small campsite. From there our trail climbs to a shepherd’s hut called chipla atop another ridge. Then we need pass two mini streams then again climb up the ridge in forests to a Kharka at 2900m and climb up to a saddle and unshisha, a small meadow. From here trail joins the ridge that divide the Ishwa and Kasuwa drainages. Then we move over a hillock and descend a bit to reach Kauma. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner).

Day 7

​Kauma to Mumbuk (3570m) 6-7 hours.

Leaving Kauma , we climb on steep step for a while ,then climb less steeply through rhododendron forests to the top of the ridge , and we can see many wall adorned with prayer flags. From here we can visit stunning views of Chamlang, peak 6 and peak 7. Following the ridge for a while we need ax end a stone staircase. Our trail gives left off the crest to a small take. We can climb frequently up a shallow rock gully to the Kike La. From here we descend to another lake and then ascend steeply through large boulders to the Tutula. Our trail keep continue descending about 150meters into sparse rhododendron forests to a level area.  Then again final descent is through a forest of firs and rhododendron to Mumbuk. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 8

​Mumbuk to Nhe Kharka (3000m) 6- 7 hours.

Our trail goes descend a steep along through a stream for 500meters, then we take left through fir forests, along the flank of the Barun valley. Moving along about 200meters long slide area, and then follow the river to a Kharka. Passing through forests of birch and shrub rhododendron we reach Yangle Kharka. We ascend a steep from Yangle Kharka, and we need to cross Barun khola to reach Nhe Kharka. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 9

Nhe Kharka to Sherson (4615m) 6-7 hours.

Today our trail begins from Nhe-Kharka forwards Sherson, we follow the north bank of the Barun Khola for a while. Then we cross a mini wooden bridge before the river turns northward. The Barun valley maked a big S shaped curve and walls are almost vertically 1500 to 2000meters above the river. Our trail climbs gently towards to Ripok Kharka. We continue our journey at the north side of the Barun through the rhododendron forest foe alpine tundra . Above Ripok Kharka ourroute crosses through rocky crest with a few Goths and we take ascends alongside a moraine formed by the Barun glacier. On the way we can use excellent views of Pyramid Peak, Peak 4, Chamlang, Peak 3 and Peak 5, as we pass a ridge the glacier turns slightly north we enter an alluvial valley just before Sherson. Walking for a while then we enter to Sherson. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 10

​Sherson to Makalu base camp (5000m) 5-6 hours.

From Sherson, we begin our trail towards to Makalu Base camp. From Sherson, we stay to the right in a gully on the east side of the valley. Our trail takes descent to a miner pass about 100meters above Makalu Base camp and we take a descend step to a stream, cross on boulders to the base camp on the west bank of the river. Walling about 4 to 5 hours we reach to Makalu Base camp. Overnight at tented Camp, (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 11

Explore Makalu Base camp.

Makalu Base camp is a rocky barren place with enormous Barun glacier beyond, where we get chance to take in the breath taking views of the summit. From here we can view a magnificent truth face of Makalu and see the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse. Here we can explore the surrounding lakes, glaciers and go for a short trek up from here. We can enjoy throughout the day. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 12

​Makalu Base camp to Nhe Kharka (3000m) 6-7 hours.

Today we follow same route. Our step goes down the Barun valley towards Nhe Kharka. Walking about 6-7 hours we reach to Nhe Kharka from Makalu base camp. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 13

​Nhe Kharka to Mumbuk(3570m) 5-6 hours.

From Nhe Kharka we begin our trail towards to Mumbuk. We continue descending through the forests to Mumbuk. In Mumbuk we get to view beautiful sunset and views of Makalu and Chamlong. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 14

​Mumbuk to Kauma (3470m) 6-7 hours.

Its take 7 hours to reach Kauma from Mumbuk. Leaving Mumbuk our trail goes through crossing the Shipton La and continue descend steps towards to Kauma. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 15

​Kauma to Tashi Gaon(2070m) 6-7 hours.

Today, we proceed towards to Tashi Gaon. We make a long steps descent back to Tashi Gaon. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 16

​Tashi Gaon to Balung (760m)5-6 hours.

Our trail goes descend to Kasuwa khola valley back to Sedua, then return south down to west bank of the Arun River. From here our trail follows the descends gently to Mulgaon, and then goes steeply on a rocky trail through fields of corn and barley to the Ipsuwa khola crossing suspension bridge and we enters the hot bottom lands of the Arun valley. Most of the settlements in this area are temporary settlements used by Rai and Chhettri farmers. Passing the villages we continue along the trail through rocky fields to Balung. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 17

​Balung to Pukuwa (550m) 6- 7hrs

We continue our trek from Balung. Passing through temporary farming settlements of Rai village of walking our trail descends to the Apsawa khola and crossing suspension bridge. We need to climb up steepy to Chhayang, another pleasant Rai village with an extensive bamboo pipe water supply. Again we need to cross a stream and goes some up and down steps to reach Parangbu. Walking continually through forests and pass several mini streams we reach to Pukuwa. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 18

​Pukuwa to Bumling (370m) 6hours.

Today, our trail follows a route through forests and some breathtaking high and exposed narrow tracks as it climbs over rocky ridges. Then our trails continually descend towards to Tome. Below Tome the Arun valley becomes wider and more U shaped. Then we need to climb over another ridge on a steep, narrow stairway of rocky steps. Our trails descend to a delightful camp on the banks of the Sankhuwa khola, across from the Chhetri village of Bumling.

Day 19

​Bumling to tumlingtar (460m) 5-6 hours.

Today, we move towards to Tumlingtar. Leaving Bumling, our trail climbs over a ridge and descends to the Inkhuwa khola, crossing it on a rickety wooden bridge. Then our trail follows the river downstream to its confluence with the Arun. Following the Arun downstream, crossing a large suspension bridge now we follow the east bank of the Arun, the route passes through Chyawa- besi before making a short climb back to the Tumlingtar. Overnight at tented Camp. (Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 20

​Fly back to Kathmandu.

Today, we fly back to Kathmandu after a long trek to the mountains area. After taking 50 minutes of flight we landed to Kathmandu airport. Back to the hotel, we can take rest and relax throughout the day at our hotel.

Day 21

​Departure.

Our journey in Nepal comes to an end. Today our staff will drop you to the airport approximately 3 hours before of your scheduled flight. (Meal Included: Breakfast)
