Mount Everest receives 5G coverage: Delivered by China Mobile & Huawei

| |

On May 1st, The telecom giant China Mobile and Huawei successfully started the operation of 5G coverage at the base camp of Mount Everest. The base station is situated at an altitude of 6,500m, officially claiming the title of the world’s highest-altitude base station. Everest Mountaineers can now enjoy high-speed 5G internet access on Everest Base Camp.

Mount Everest is located at the Nepal-China border with an altitude of 8,848m. The installation of 5G stations could be helpful for faster and better communication at such high altitudes. It is also believed that the new connectivity will also aid in rescue services, researchers, reporters, and telecommunication.

According to Huawei, the new base station at Forward Camp (6,500m) now facilitates an end-to-end solution to the stations which were previously built in Mount Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,300m and the Transition Camp at 5,800m.

What is a 5G connection?

5G is the fifth generation of wireless communication technology. The 5G not only offers a faster connection but also opens up future opportunities. It offers a greater bandwidth with network capacity like never before. However, 5G is still new and electronic manufacturers have yet to adapt to its ultra-speed connectivity.

Today smartphone companies are busy with remodeling their mobile devices to utilize the full potential of the 5G network. With the increasing demand for high-tech electronics, autonomous cars, and High-Definition (HD) conference calls/virtual meetings, 5G will gradually shape the future of technology.

How fast is 5G at Mount Everest?

To give you a rough idea of the internet speed at The Everest Base Camp, the 5G download speed exceeds 1.65 GB/s, and the max upload speed it 215MB/s. Such speed will not only help in communication but also live broadcasting from the top of the world.

The construction of the 5G base station at Mount Everest was made possible by the joint effort of Huawei and China Mobile on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first successful arrival at Mount Everest from the northern slope. Huawei also ensures the high capacity optimization of streaming quality that will allow fault locating as quickly as one click of a button.

Additional FAQs:

Is there wifi on Everest Base Camp?

Yes, there is. Some parts of the base camp have active wireless connectivity while the most region is yet to be covered. With the new installation of the base tower by Huawei and China Mobile, it is believed to cover a large area of Everest region which will be used for high priority projects and rescue tasks.

Can I use the internet during Everest Base Camp Trek?

Yes, you can. There are certain stops during the Everest Base Camp Trek where internet is accessible. For instance, Lukla and Namche Bazaar. However, the majority of the area still remains disconnected. The EBC Trek internet access is also possible through cellular data, an alternative for trekkers, but the coverage might not be as good.

What is the speed of the internet in Mount Everest?

The answer is “it depends”. If you are using a wifi on Everest Base Camp trek, then the average speed ranges from 5mbps to 100mbps. Do not expect a higher internet connection as various base tower projects are still in progress. If you are using cellular data, then the speed depends on the network coverage. Usually, 3G is the highest connection for the cellular data connection.

Nevertheless, the initiation has yet to come into effect from 2020. The current situation of the COVID-19 global pandemic has undoubtedly affected the full utilization of the new 5G connection. However, the ongoing re-measurement officials of Mount Everest can take this to their advantage.
