Holi in Nepal 2020 (The Festival of Colors)

| | , , ,

Holi is an ancient festival popular among the Hindus. It is the festival of colors which associate with happiness and joy. Holi brings out the nostalgia of togetherness and playfulness as well as signifies the arrival of spring and the end of winter.

In Nepal, Holi takes place on the full moon day in the month of Falgun (Feb-Mar in solar calendar). It lasts for 2 days, March 9 and 10 of 2020 to be specific. The festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and the approaching spring season. People gather at different locations and play with colors. Since it is a great opportunity to meet up with new people and go out for concerts, Nepalese celebrate the festival with the utmost pleasure and music. You will see people throwing colors (powdered) and water at each other.

Cultural Significance of Holi

The Holi festival has a cultural significance among Hindu traditions including Nepal. It is the festive day when one can rid themselves of past errors, end conflicts, meeting new people, and a day to forget and forgive. For many Nepalese, Holi means an occasion of joy and togetherness.

The prominent purpose of the festival is the beginning of Spring. The 17th-century literature identifies Holi as a festival that celebrated agriculture, commemorated good spring harvests, and the fertile land. Hindus believe that the festival is a time of enjoying spring’s abundant colors and farewell to winter. To many people, Holi marks the beginning of the New Year and renew ruptured relationships and conflicts.

Traditions and Rituals of Holi

Different from India, Holi is celebrated in Nepal with a special ceremony namely Chir Haran or Holika Dahan. The ceremony includes erecting a wooden pole and Nepali women in beautiful Sari circles around the pole with auspicious things in hand to pray for the blessings. This marks the official beginning of the festival of Holi.

Holi celebration is classified into two parts. The first one being Holika Dhanan and the second as Rangwali Holi. During these events, The Durbar Square and its surroundings are filled with vivid colors and colorful waters. The festival ends with a Holi bonfire in a serene atmosphere. Regardless of the ritual difference in Hindus, the intentions remain the same, to gather and have fun.

Higly recommended I did the Langtang Valley trekk with Gosaikunda lakes included. The preparation and communication for that has been great all the time. Nim is an excellent and knowledgeable person. My Trekkingguide was Gorakh and i couldn't have hoped for a better one! I felt like i was in good hands throughout the trekk and he took care of my dietary needs. They also booked my bus ticket to Pokhara and asked the bus driver to pick me up at a place which was closer to my accommodation. Thank you so much Nim!! Next time i will do the Manaslu trekk with you :)

Trek to Rara Lake in Nepal with CoreTreks My wife and I had been planning to visit Nepal since like a year ago. We are really happy and satisfied with our trek to Rara Lake in Nepal. The place is really chilling with beautiful scenery all around. Luckily the weather was fantastic and we got a clear view of the mountains and the lake. We are really humbled to be able to experience such a rare privilege. Our guides informed us that the weather is often bad especially because of the altitude. The alpine vegetation surrounded by mountains was really special to observe. I would like to thank CoreTreks for helping us throughout our journey to Rara Lake.
Great service Beautiful temples and delicious food After touring around the Kathmandu valley, I’m inspired to explore more about Nepal. Unfortunately it will have to be during my next visit. The city is way busier than I expected it to be. As we drove outside the valley, we discovered some peaceful environment and beautiful temples. The Nepali cuisine in Kathmandu was something I would love to try again. They are spicy but delicious. I have to say that the people in Nepal are really friendly and welcoming. Everyone greeted us with love and treated us nicely. There was no fear for a lone traveler like me to get through the tour. Thanks to CoreTreks and the team for making this tour possible for me. I booked last minute but they helped me through everything. I really appreciate it. If you are looking to visit Nepal, I highly recommend that you book from CoreTreks they are the best.
