After recent events, Nepal is back to normal and ready to share its cultural and natural wonders with you.
Have you heard about the earthquake’s impact on one of Nepal’s most remote yet beautiful locations? We are talking about the Langtang Valley. It had been a major tourist destination for several years before April 25, 2015, when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal, taking lives, destroying habitats, and leaving the valley in a condition like never before. The Langtang region has been healing from the traumatic experience after an earthquake.
As of now, the location has been open for visits, and many travelers have gone there for years after the devastating calamity. The old village of Langtang was rich in unique culture and was one of the few places in Nepal unaffected by modernization. The rich culture has been upheld from ancestral times to religious aspects, and the new village has been restored in every possible way. Here’s all you need to know about Langtang Valley after an earthquake in 2015; read till the end!

Everything had been perfect in Langtang before the earthquake of April 2015. The people of Langtang lived a simple life, raising their cattle, farming, and serving travelers with amenities. Likewise, there was impressive growth during the Langtang trek. Trekkers found Langtang Lirung more attractive than many major trekking destinations in the country. Every festival season, the locals from different communities, including Gurung, Sherpa, Tamang, and Magar, would unite with their neighbors and relatives for a joyous celebration.
There had been several older houses that had been left to the inhabitants by their ancestors. And religious sites like monasteries, temples, and gumbas have always served as major attractions in each landmark there. Buddhist devotees would be seen strolling around these landmarks every day. Yaks and mules would further accentuate the beauty of these locations.
The tiny village of Langtang had been joyfully celebrating a Buddhist yearly ceremony called Ghawa during the tremendous 2015 Nepal earthquake. Many locals were relaxed in their beds as it had been a day off from work, while others were active in chores. Suddenly, around 11:55 AM, the beautiful Langtang was shaken by a 7.8 Mw earthquake. What had once been one of Nepal’s most sought-after trekking destinations was left in ruins within minutes.
A massive avalanche caused further damage. The village entirely vanished in no time. Meanwhile, Langtang Lirung’s beauty remained unshaken, but on this very day, it played a role in what Langtang faced. For many, a dreamy trip to Nepal became a nightmare, and they never returned home. Since the avalanche had buried the entire village, more than half the people present in the region were buried and lost.
Panic spread everywhere, and everyone who survived was looking for their lost families. A single house was left intact. Even after the most shocking earthquake, several aftershocks followed all day. Luckily, those who survived were rescued. Bodies were fetched from the dust, and around 400 people were found to be buried. Two hundred forty-three people had succumbed. Langtang Valley was one of the most affected regions throughout Nepal.
Several days were spent rescuing everyone who had made it alive. Finding survivors in the ruins was a challenge, and it took many rescue and relief efforts to get everyone in a helicopter and then to a safe place. The rescue team eventually stopped their rescue mission after finding more victims, but to no avail.
Langtang Valley was unrecognizable after the 2015 earthquake. It may have seemed impossible for the locals to rebuild their village quickly. However, they built a new town slowly but effectively. Life in Langtang village got regular with time. The devastating earthquake sadly changed the whole city. Moreover, what was once the top trekking destination in Nepal had become barren and lifeless for several months.
Even though the ravishing Langtang world had perished, the reconstruction of the village right after the earthquake promised a better future. Sites like Langtang National Park, Kyanjin Gompa, and the Langtang Lirung Base Camp trek trails were mainly empty after the tragedy. Additionally, the threat of landslide at Langtang village as an aftermath remained long after the earthquake struck Nepal.
Both national and international organizations help came months after the village was destroyed. The following are some major organizations that made the reconstruction of the new Langtang village possible:

Langtang Village stood firm through it all and has impressively recovered after the earthquake. The houses built after the earthquake are all in good condition and have housed many locals. The population in the valley has increased in the past seven years. Thankfully, the Langtang Valley Trek has resumed for the village’s economic condition. The Langtang Lirung Base Camp trek trail continues from the town. The trekkers have already continued their trek towards the region. Treks began almost three years after the earthquake in 2015.
Langtang residents raise cattle and farm and have been going about their lives like before the disaster. The Kyanjin Gompa was restored with Japanese aid and remains a famous site among visitors. April still welcomes the yearly Buddhist ritual as it did on the day of the earthquake. However, the people have moved on from what shook their world years ago. Happiness and unity are widespread, and there are just as many ethnic groups in the village as before.
