On the way to Thimpu, you’ll visit the Tamchog Lhakhang (temple) with an iron chain bridge cast in the 14th century. You’ll get to your hotel by visiting Dechenphodrang Central Monastic School, one of the oldest Dzong, Dzong, Supreme Court, and Bhutan Parliament buildings. Check in to the hotel and stay overnight there.

Good Morning from Bhutan. From today, you’ll begin your exploration after breakfast. You’ll start your visit from the Indigenous Hospital and Traditional Medicine Centre, also known as the Institute of Traditional Medicine Service, lying at the top of the hill of Thimpu. Afterward, you will visit the Choku Traditional Art School, an institute with Thirteen Traditional Arts and Crafts, where many young students come to learn the traditional arts.

The drive moves towards the National Textile Museum, where you can see the finest textiles and uses of dress and costumes. The Museum also displays different dying raw materials, showcasing the city’s rich tradition. After the visit to the Museum, you’ll get a warm lunch at the finest restaurant and continue the visit with a 30-minute drive to Dodena. You must hike for 40 minutes afterward to get to Cheri Monastery. The landmark was built in 1620 and is one of the main retreat centers and a popular pilgrimage site in Bhutan. You can see a beautiful painting of Guru on the solid rock while roaming the monastery.

Pause and enjoy a picnic lunch near the river bank near the wooden bridge. After lunch, visit the Pangri Zampa Astrological College, where you can meet with astrology for consultations. Subsequently, hike near Takin Zoo through beautiful streams. The Dechen Podrang Monastic School is your second-last visit destination of the day; there, you can see many young monks. Get ready for today’s adventure after a hearty breakfast. Saying goodbye to Thimpu, you’ll drive to Punakha, which is 77km away. On the way to Pokhara, you’ll pass a Dochula Pass (3,150 m); there, you’ll stay for a while to enjoy a spectacular view of the ranges of the eastern Himalayas. Also, you’ll come across 108 stupas that lend the place an air of deep spirituality.

A three-hour drive takes you to Punakha. On the way, you’ll stop to have lunch. After lunch, you’ll move towards the most significant Punakha Dzong, a magnificent castle fortress serving the Old Capital city of Bhutan. It is believed to be the best illustration of Bhutanese architecture and serves as an administrative and religious hub. Built in 1637 on the intersection of the Mo Chu (female river) and the Pho Chu (male river), the monument is where the Kings of Bhutan are crowned and the leader of Buddhism in Bhutan (Chief Abbot) winter resident.

Then, drive to Lobesa village to explore the Temple of Fertility, Chimi Lhakhang. Built in the 15th century, the temple is dedicated to Buddhist master and rebel Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the Divine Madman. Today, the temple is visited by barren couples to acquire the blessings of fertility.

Punakha to Phobjekha via Wangdue

The fourth day takes you to Phobjekha. However, you’ll get to Wangdue along the way. A two-hour drive crossing the Gangtey Pass (3140 m) takes you to Phobjekha Valley. The Valley is one of the roosting grounds of the Black-necked cranes (grus nigri collies.) Each winter, the birds migrate from Tibet and Siberia to here. Also, visit the 16th-century Gangtey Goempa monastery in the Valley. From the monastery, start hiking below the near Mani wall chorten via pine forest along with a view of the central Phobjekha valley where the Crane feeds in winter.

The trail takes you to the Khewa village in the middle of the Potato fields and Meadow. Visit the old  Khewa Lhakhang, built in the 14th century, and meditate inside the temple. Have a delicious lunch at a lodge, and visit the Crane information center to see the Crane Preservation Project with a display on the community and RSPN working together to preserve the Crane. In the evening, return to Phobjekha for an overnight stay.

We retrace our journey today with a scenic drive to Paro. On the way, you’ll pass through Thimphu city, where you will stop for lunch. As you get to Paro, you’ll visit the National Museum ( TaDzong), which has over 3,000 works of Bhutanese art. This was once the Watch Tower for the Rinpung Dzong. It was converted into a National Museum in 1968. It has many national treasures, and visiting the Museum will provide an excellent introduction to Bhutan and its history.

In the evening you are free to go shopping around Paro town. After shopping, check in to your hotel and sleep well.

Day 6 is the second last day in Bhutan and the final exploration day. You’ll hike to Taktshang’s “Tiger’s Nest” on the day. The monastery has become a must for every visitor to Bhutan. This religious edifice is about 800 meters above the Paro Valley floor and is built on a dizzying ridge of a monumental granite cliff that dangles on a mountainside. How it could have been built in the 17th century remains a mystery; a story is that heavenly spirits (Khandromas) aided in its construction.

The monastery is where the Padmasambhava, an eighth-century master considered the second Buddha in the Himalayan Buddhist earth, mediated and disguised religious teachings for future generations. Afterward, you’ll explore Drukgyal Dzong monastery, located in the upper part of the Paro District.
