Essential info for Upper Mustang Trek

Why Take The Upper Mustang Trek?

Upper Mustang is a unique trek to the restricted area of Nepal. It is an adventurous as well as rich trekking experience that you must take at least once in your lifetime. Take a look at various reasons why you should take the Upper Mustang Trek:

Lo Manthang (Kingdom of Lo)

The Upper Mustang Trek is a unique opportunity to explore the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” Lo Manthang. Founded in the 15th century by the Tibetan king, it was previously known as the “Kingdom of Lo.” The city is surrounded by a huge wall that holds numerous ancient heritages and artifacts. The city also has an ancient five-story palace, monasteries, caves, and gompas. Trekkers can visit and explore these places and heritage sites during the trek. It is a unique and enriching experience that will make your journey memorable.

Nepal’s Little Tibet

The Upper Mustang region shares its border with Tibet. As a result, there is a massive influence on Tibetan culture and religion in the region. There are also many Tibetan settlements in the area. The residents in the area have Tibetan origin and share the culture, traditions, and language. They also follow Tibetan Buddhism, and the monasteries in the area reflect the ancient Tibetan architecture. Upper Mustang has earned the nickname “Nepal’s Little Tibet.” The trek allows you to learn and immerse in their unique culture.

Wide and beautiful views of the Himalayas

The Upper Mustang Trek lets you see wide views of the Himalayan mountains. During the trek, you will get to witness close views of Annapurna Massif, Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Tilicho Peak (7134 m), Nilgiri (7061 m), Thorong Peak (6144 m), and more. There are several viewpoints along the route that offer stunning views of the towering mountains. Some of the best viewpoints along the route are Kagbeni, Syangboche, Chele, Lo Manthang, Chhosar, and others.

Rainshadow With Desert-like Landscapes

Upper Mustang lies in the rainshadow area of the country. The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges block the monsoon cloud and prevent rainfall. Hence, the landscape is dry and desert-like with an arid climate. It gives the Upper Mustang a Trans-Himalayan appearance. During the trek, you will pass through rocky cliffs, deep canyons, unique eroded rock formations, and wind-carved landscapes. Similarly, you will trek close to the ancient salt trade route between Nepal and Tibet. The landscapes are truly dramatic and unique than anywhere else.

Kaligandaki Gorge & River with Shaligrams

The Upper Mustang Trek trail runs along the Kali Gandaki River. It is a holy river, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhist people. Meanwhile, the Kali Gandaki River is the world’s deepest gorge at 5571 meters. You will find numerous sacred Shaligrams or fossil stones as you trek alongside the river trail. The Shaligrams are fossilized remains of ammonites that roamed the earth 140 million years ago. It is the proof that the Himalayas were once an ocean floor. These Shaligramas are naturally found only in the Kali Gandaki River. Hindu devotees believe that these fossils are sacred representations of Lord Vishnu. You can look closer at these fossil stones during the Upper Mustang Trek.

Holy Lake of Damodar Kunda

The holy lake of Damodar Kunda is a high-altitude lake that lies in Upper Mustang. It sits at an altitude of 4890 meters and is a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists. During the Upper Mustang Trek, you can take a side trip to the Damodar Kunda and witness its stunning beauty. Devotees believe that bathing in the holy lake cleanses one’s sins. Barren and high-altitude desert surrounds the lake and gives it a mesmerizing look. Similarly, the spectacular views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Mustang Himal are clearly visible.

Cultural Exploration & Festivals

The trek to Nepal’s Little Tibet is also a cultural tour. The region is close to Tibet, and the locals are of Tibetan origin. Moreover, the area was isolated from the outside world for a long time, which has helped preserve its rich and ancient heritage. During the Upper Mustang Trek, you will immerse yourself in the ancient culture and traditions of the region and take a closer look at these ancient heritages. You can also match your trek dates with the Tiji and Yartung festivals. You can participate in the festival and observe the local rituals and ceremonies.

Forbidden Kingdom Of Lo Manthang

The Mustang region even had a king until recent times. Villages in Upper Mustang are scattered, and this region has desert albeit mountainous areas. The Upper Mustang in Nepal lies beyond the Himalayan Ranges of Nepal towards the Tibetan Plateau, and the Himalayas of Nepal lie towards the south of the Upper Mustang region. Travelers can experience a very primitive lifestyle among the communities while traveling to Upper Mustang, which is still prevalent today due to its originality.

Ame Pal founded the Kingdom of Lo in 1380 and built the walled city of Lo Manthang. The walled city became the capital of Upper Mustang. During the 15th and 17th centuries, the city became a hub for trade between Tibet and India. At that period, the Mustang was used as the trading route for Nepal and Tibet. From rock salts to powered gold, wools, yaks, and horses, the route was important for import and export. The route became less used after India started exporting iodized salt to Nepal.

Nepal annexed Mustang in the 18th century and became part of the country in 1975. The Lo Manthang region remained independent until the 1950s, when it was integrated with Nepal. It remained isolated from the outside world until 1992. Due to its long isolation, it remained one of the most well-preserved regions in the world. It was also named the “Last Forbidden Kingdom.”

Why Was The Upper Mustang Region Restricted?

There are several reasons that the Upper Mustang Region is a restricted area in Nepal. Here is a brief on them:

Geopolitical sensitivity

Upper Mustang and Tibet share a border. As a result, it is a politically sensitive region, and for security purposes, Upper Mustang is declared a restricted area. It was a major trading route for Nepal and Tibet. When China annexed Tibet in 1950, tension began to increase between the Chinese government and Tibetan Khampa guerrillas. In the 1960s and 70s, Tibetan Khampa guerrillas used Mustang as their base. There was pressure from China, and Nepal restricted the Upper Mustang region.

Heritage preservation

Due to the long isolation from the outside world, Upper Mustang remained untouched from the outside world. Hence, Lo Mathang has some of the world’s best-preserved heritage. The ancient five-story Lo Manthang Palace, which dates back to 1442, is inside the walled city. Several monasteries and over 10,000 mysterious sky caves carved inside the mountain cliffs were also found. Mummified human remains, and thousands of age-old artifacts were excavated from the caves. The Forbidden Kingdom of Lo Manthang is a treasure box with fascinating mysteries and heritages. The government has designated the Upper Mustang as a restricted area to preserve these ancient heritages.

Environment protection

Another reason why Upper Mustang is a restricted area is because of its delicate ecosystem and unique biodiversity. Its landscape is desert-like and arid. Various flora and fauna, including rare species, are found here. For example, Yarsagumba (a highly prized caterpillar fungus), snow leopard, Blue sheep, Tibetan Argali, Himalayan Griffons, and many others inhabit the region. Over-tourism can degrade the natural habitat and disturb the ecosystem. Hence, the government has restricted the Upper Mustang to preserve the environment. It also helps regulate tourism in the region and prevents over-exploitation of nature to maintain its serene atmosphere.

Upper Mustang Trek Length And Terrain

The Upper Mustang trek length can vary from 150 to 200 kilometers depending on the route. It takes around 12 to 14 days to complete the entire trek. The starting point of the trek is Jomsom, Mustang’s district headquarters. You can easily take a flight or a jeep from Pokhara to reach Jomsom. You will trek past several traditional villages, settlements, and diverse landscapes from here. You will come across beautiful villages like Kagbeni, Chaile, Geling, Charang, etc., to reach Lo Manthang.

The Mustang terrain is unique, with desert-like and arid landscapes. Since there is very little rainfall here, as it falls in the rainshadow area, the terrain is dry and dusty. During the journey, you will trek on these dry, rough, and rugged terrains. Prepare to trek mostly on dirt trails with loose rocks. There are a few steep and narrow sections along the route. Similarly, you will come across barren hills, eroded cliffs, deep canyons, gorges, dry valleys, and unique rock formations.

Pokhara To Upper Mustang

To get to Upper Mustang from Pokhara, you must first take a flight or jeep to Jomsom (2743 m). Taking a flight is quicker as it only takes 25 minutes to fly from Pokhara to Jomsom. From here, you will start your trek journey. You will then trek to Kagbeni (2804 m), the gateway to Upper Mustang. The Kagbeni Village is one of the oldest settlements, dating back to the 14th century. There is a checkpost at the village exit where you must show your permits.

Aerial view of Kagbeni
Aerial View Of Kagbeni

From Kagbeni, you will trek on the east bank of the Kali Gandaki River. The trail goes through several ridges, passing by several traditional villages to reach Chaile (3110 m). From here, the trail continues ascending, and the landscape becomes barren. You will trek alongside a steep canyon and reach Samar village. The trail goes uphill above a ridge and downhill to a large gorge and Shyangmochen. Then, you will climb a pass and descend to Geling (3500 m).

The trail from Geling gradually begins to go up to Nyi La Pass (3930 m) and descends to the blue, gray, and red cliffs. You will then cross a bridge over the Tangmar Chu River. Similarly, you will trek along the longest Mani wall in the Mustang region and descend to the Charang village. The trail continues to ascend towards Lo-Gekar Gompa, one of the oldest Gompas in the area. Then, you will continue climbing to Lo Manthang (3840 m).

What can I expect during the Upper Mustang?

During the 17-day Upper Mustang Trek, you will trek for 4 to 6 hours on average. Each day will be an exciting and adventurous journey. You will get to explore new places, take photos, and enjoy sceneries. Your guide will accompany you throughout the trek journey. Similarly, the porter will carry your heavy luggage.

You will begin your day early and have your breakfast. Then, depending on the day’s destination, you will start your trek around 7 to 8 AM. The morning treks are usually longer than the evening ones. You will trek for three to four hours and take a lunch break. After an hour’s break, you will resume your trek. The afternoon trek is around two to three hours. You will check in at your accommodation and explore in your spare time.

The dinner is usually served around 7 PM. After dinner, your guide will briefly brief you on the following day’s journey. Then, you can chat, watch videos, play cards, or read books. You can also learn Nepalese words or greetings with your guide and porter.

What type of food and accommodation facility to expect during the Mustang Trek in Nepal?

Local run teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses provide food and accommodation facilities along the Upper Mustang Trek route. They are simple and provide only basic facilities. Due to a lack of infrastructure, the amenities are also limited. However, these accommodations are affordable and offer the opportunity to glimpse the local culture, traditions, and lifestyle. You will also get to experience rural hospitality during the trek.

The teahouses are usually on a shared basis. You may also come across dormitory-style accommodations. Bathrooms are generally communal and squat style. Lower regions or slightly large towns along the trails may have single rooms with private bathrooms. But they are rare and more expensive. The accommodations provide beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. The rooms may not be well insulated, so it is highly advised that the trekkers bring a sleeping bag during the journey.

Most teahouses and lodges in higher elevation regions do not have proper electricity. They run on solar power. Therefore, the accommodations charge additional costs for services like internet/Wi-Fi, charging devices, hot water/ showers, etc. In some higher regions, the teahouses provide hot water in a bucket for showers.

dal bhat tarkari

These accommodations offer a variety of meal options to the trekkers. You will mostly find staple Nepalese, local as well as international cuisines on the menu. The staple Nepalese dish, Dal Bhat, is available at almost every teahouse and eatery along the route. Some other meal options that are available during the Upper Mustang Trek are as follows:

Communication & Internet Facilities

There is no need to worry about communication and internet facilities during the 17-day Upper Mustang Trek. These facilities are available along the route. The teahouses and lodges along the route provide these services for an additional cost. However, the WiFi/ internet connection is relatively poor at higher altitude regions. It is not suitable for heavy data-intensive work, but it is enough to keep you connected. In some high-elevation areas, the service may be non-existent.

You can also buy a local SIM in Kathmandu to stay connected with your family and friends. Different telecom operators, such as Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell, offer a wide range of services and data packages at affordable prices. These operators provide better connectivity while traveling in rural areas. However, phone signals can get weaker in some places.

The most budget-friendly and local way of traveling to Upper Mustang is via roadway. There are many jeeps and buses that operate from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Mustang. You can quickly get the tickets at bus counters in Kathmandu. Similarly, you can also ask your trek agency to book one for you.

Traveling on a local bus is affordable but less comfortable and crowded. Hence, hiring a private jeep for a more convenient and comfortable travel experience is best. It is also faster than traveling on a local bus. Hiring a private jeep is more expensive than traveling on a local bus. So, depending on your needs and budget, you can select the option that fits you the best.

By Air

Traveling by air is much faster and more comfortable than traveling by roadway. However, it is expensive, so it is suitable for those with a flexible budget. Upper Mustang has no airport, so you must take a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. You can either trek or hire a jeep from Jomsom to Upper Mustang. The flights to Jomsom Airport usually operate in the morning, as high winds often obstruct the afternoon flights.

Another way to reach Upper Mustang via airway is to book a helicopter ride. It is the fastest and most convenient way of getting there. You can skip trekking or driving and reach your destination directly. However, it is expensive and not suitable for budget travelers. However, it is perfect for trekkers who have limited time. You can either share a helicopter or book a private charter.

Impact Of Road Construction

In recent years, Upper Mustang has garnered national and international attention. The “Last Forbidden Kingdom” or the “Last Shangri-La,” Lo Manthang, has become a hub for cultural explorers. Its adventurous trails and unique desert-like landscape have made it popular among beginner and seasoned trekkers. The ongoing road construction in the Annapurna region has also connected Upper Mustang. However, the construction of the new road has had both positive and negative effects.

The road construction has made it easier for locals to access various facilities and connect the area with other parts of the country. However, it has increased the number of travelers. The new road has made it easier to access the area, and it has caused tourist traffic. While the increasing number of tourists has increased the income sources for the locals, it has jeopardized the pristine beauty of the Upper Mustang. Likewise, it has raised concerns about preserving the ancient culture and heritages. The increased number of jeeps and motorcycles has also increased pollution and dirt in the area.

In a way, the construction of the new road is the modern Silk Road. It has connected Upper Mustang with the outside world and uplifted locals’ lives. However, there is also a negative impact on the delicate environment, culture, and ancient heritages. The government and locals must join hands to preserve the environment and age-old heritage while regulating tourism in the area as road construction progresses.

Overland Jeep Tour VS Trekking

It is possible to take an Upper Mustang Overland Jeep Tour if you want to skip trekking. The overland jeep tour is relatively short and less physically demanding. Similarly, it is comfortable and suitable for beginners, kids, and elderly travelers. Riding a jeep on the arid and Trans-Himalayan landscapes with winding roads is an adventure you do not want to miss. You will drive by the traditional settlements and through barren ridges, eroded canyons, valleys, gorges, and high cliffs. The cost of hiring a Jeep is higher than trekking.

upper mustang jeep tour

On the other hand, Upper Mustang Trek is the perfect way to explore the rugged and unique terrains of the Annapurna region. You will pass through beautiful traditional villages and many kinds of landscapes. Although trekking is physically demanding, it is also extremely fulfilling and rewarding. The sense of achievement as you finally reach the ancient city of Lo-Manthang is truly memorable. It is a suitable option for those with flexible time. Moreover, it is more affordable than the Overland Jeep Tour.

How difficult is Upper Mustang Trekking in Nepal?

The Mustang trek in Nepal is moderate in terms of travel difficulties. Anyone with reasonable health and fitness can participate in the trek. There is also no need for prior experience, so it is perfect for beginners and seasoned trekkers. However, the trek still requires good strength, stamina, and endurance. Trekkers must prepare physically and mentally for the journey.

Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang Trek

The trails of Upper Mustang are remote, and trekkers must hike on diverse terrains. You must navigate through desert or arid landscapes on rough and rocky terrains. There are numerous twists and turns en route. As you ascend to Upper Mustang, the trails become dusty and steep, and trekkers must hike on loose gravel. The trekking region also lies in a remote area that lacks proper infrastructure and modern amenities. It will physically challenge trekkers as well as mentally.

Another difficulty of the Upper Mustang Trek is the high altitude. During the trek, you will ascend to an elevation of 3840 meters above sea level. There is a slight risk of altitude sickness, so trekkers must take proper precautions during the trek. The weather also starts to become unpredictable at higher altitude areas. It can change at any moment. There is little rainfall as the Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow area. However, high winds and temperature drops are common during afternoons. So, trekkers must carry adequate clothing and gear for the Upper Mustang Trek.

How To Prevent Altitude Sickness?

Over 25% of trekkers experience altitude sickness while trekking to higher altitudes above 2500 meters above sea level. Hence, there is the risk of altitude sickness during high-altitude treks like the Upper Mustang. The symptoms can vary from person to person and range from mild to severe. There are several ways to prevent altitude sickness, which are as follows:

  • Ascend to higher elevation gradually. Rushing to the higher altitude makes it harder for trekkers to adjust to the elevation. It increases the risk of altitude-related sickness.
  • Take acclimatization or rest days. These give your body adequate time to adjust to the changing elevation and surroundings and allow it to recover from exhaustion.
  • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the trek. Drink plenty of fluids, at least 4 to 5 liters a day, to fight off the symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Eat a healthy and nutritious diet during the trek. A high-carb, high-protein diet will energize your body for the demanding journey.
  • Acclimatizing can be more challenging for beginners, so take your time ascending to higher elevations.
  • During the trek, climb high and sleep low. You can climb to a higher altitude at daytime but descend to a slightly lower altitude to sleep at night.
  • Avoid excessive intake of caffeine, hot chocolates, smoking tobacco, and drinking alcoholic beverages. These products can worsen the symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • To relieve the symptoms of altitude sickness, you can take medications such as acetazolamide, ibuprofen, and promethazine. However, consult with your health professional before taking these medications.

How To Prepare For The Upper Mustang Trek?

Upper Mustang is a moderate-grade trek, but it requires proper preparation. Here is how you can prepare for the venture:

Physical Preparation

To conquer the rugged and rough trekking trails of the Upper Mustang, trekkers must make physical preparations. As trekkers ascend and descend on varied terrain, they must start training two to three months before the journey. It is best to undertake exercises and training that help enhance one’s strength, stamina, and endurance. Cardiovascular exercises such as running, jogging, hiking, swimming, brisk walking, cycling, etc. help to build physical fitness. Other exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, planks, etc., are also incredibly beneficial. Similarly, trekkers can also practice hiking with a heavy backpack to stimulate the rough trekking conditions.

Mental Preparation

Mental preparation is equally crucial as physical preparation. Many trekkers get triggered due to the challenging trails, remote location, and unpredictable weather. It can cause stress and demotivate trekkers. Therefore, trekkers must research the Upper Mustang and its challenges. They must understand the possible difficulties and set realistic expectations from the journey. It helps to build a positive attitude towards the trek. Similarly, trekkers can prepare better for the journey. Yoga and meditation can help with mental preparation. Trekkers are highly suggested to build mental resilience for the Upper Mustang Trek.

Due to the remoteness of the region and lack of infrastructure, there are no currency exchange or ATM services along the Upper Mustang route. You may find some ATMs at Jomsom, but they may not be reliable. So, it is best to exchange currency and withdraw cash while in Kathmandu or Pokhara. You will need some money for personal expenses during the journey.

You can exchange the currency at local banks and financial institutions. However, depending on the bank, you must pay a service charge of about four percent or more. You can also use ATMs to withdraw cash. Most ATMs are open for 24 hours. You can withdraw a maximum amount of NPR 35,000 with an NPR 500 processing charge using a foreign card.
