The two ideal seasons for trekking are Spring and autumn, whereas the two offseasons are Monsoon and Winter.
Many trekkers argue that the Autumn season is the best time for the Mustang trek. Autumn starts in the middle of September and ends in November. The early days of September still fall during the post-monsoon season, so the region suffers mild to heavy rainfall daily. However, as the days progress and October arrives, the peak Autumn season makes the Mustang region even more beautiful than it is now. The significant highlights of trekking in the Autumn season is the amazing views of skies, mountains, and the surrounding villages; in the Autumn, the jungles turn brown-golden, especially the sunrise and sunset, making the trek even more beautiful and suitable to click some stunning photos.
Another ideal season for trekking the Mustang region is the fantastic Spring season. The spring season runs from March to May, and since it starts right after the winter season, the beginning part of the Spring season is a bit chilly. The major attractions of trekking in the spring season are the beautiful, colorful flowering trails, jungles with lush vegetation, and the chirping of birds accompanying you throughout the trails. Just like in Autumn, the majestic views of the skies, mountains, and lakes, along with the chance to meet rare floras and faunas, make the Spring trek of Mustang special.
It can be challenging during the summer season in Upper Mustang because heavy to mild monsoon rains occur every day. The weather is hot and humid, with heavy rainfall causing landslides, making travel difficult. However, this time of year is relatively quiet in the area, making it an excellent time to travel if you want to avoid crowds. The average temperature during this season ranges from 15°C to 20°C during the day and drops to around 5°C, sometimes below freezing at night.
Like the Monsoon season, Winter is also less ideal for trekking, especially high-altitude treks like those in the Mustang region. The temperature is freezing, and changing weather and the constant heavy snowfall disturb the smooth operation of the trek. Furthermore, blistering winds, which combine with snow, often bring snowstorms and blizzards that can injure someone or damage their property. The chance of sickness and cough is extremely high, and the chance of hypothermia is also prevalent. Due to the constant snowfall, there are avalanches, which are dangerous for trekkers in the mountains.
For the Mustang Trek, trekkers must issue permits such as a Restricted Area Permit, Annapurna Conservation Permit, and Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS card). Ensure you have issued all the permits before heading to trek in the Mustang region. You must pay specific fees for this trek; the restricted permit is way more expensive than others.
