Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is among the most remote and high-altitude trek destinations of Nepal. Considered a “hidden gem”, the trek is a unique and extraordinary adventure. The beautiful Manaslu region is located in the Gorkha District in north-central Nepal. Its quiet and off-the-beaten trekking trail is different from the commercialized routes. The route encircles the world’s eighth-highest mountain, the towering Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft). The journey begins with a bumpy and thrilling drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. Then, you will traverse through dense forests to the alpine meadows and barren landscapes within the Manaslu Conservation Area. The Manaslu adventure also allows you to explore the restricted area of the country.
The main highlight of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is the high mountain pass of Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,924 ft). It is a challenging but also the most rewarding part of the adventure. Additionally, Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Larkya Peak, Ganesh Himal Range, and more will accompany you throughout the trip. Along the route, there are traditional settlements of the Gurung community. The Bhutias, Sherpas, and other people of Tibetan ethnicity also live in this region. You will navigate through Tibetan-influenced villages like Deng, Namrung, Samagaun, Samdo, and others. Similarly, you will pass by Buddhist landmarks, including monasteries, main walls, chortens, and others. Our 15 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek is a perfect adventure with a rich cultural experience and unparalleled views. You can also combine the Tsum Valley Trek with the Himalayan Manaslu Circuit for an extraordinary Manaslu region trek adventure.

The first option is an adventurous and strenuous hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft). It takes 6 to 8 hours, but the hike is worth it. You will climb up to the foothill of the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Manaslu, and offer an up-close view of the giant. Similarly, you can see the surrounding view of the glacier.
Another option is a short 2-hour hike to the glacial lake of Birendra Tal (3,450 m / 11,319 ft). It is a sacred lake at the foot of Manaslu Glacier with deep blue waters. The next option is a hike to the remote and ancient Pungyen Gompa (4,000 m / 13,123 ft). It is the spiritual hub of the Manaslu region. Similarly, we can also see a shift in the landscape as the lush vegetation gives way to alpine and green pastures. There are also several glacial stream crossings along the way. We descend, cross a wooden bridge over the Budi Gandaki River, and then ascend to a ridge situated between two river branches. After trekking for a while, we will reach Samdo. It is a Tibetan refugee village and also one of Nepal’s highest permanent settlements. We will stay overnight at Samdo.

The landscape becomes more barren and rocky. The increasing altitude makes the climb even more difficult, although the trail is not too steep. We have a big day ahead as we make our way to Bhimthang via Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,924 ft). The reason behind the early start is to avoid the strong winds and weather changes in the afternoon. Our journey begins with a climb to Cho Chanda, followed by a steep ascent up the snowy pass. We will ascend rocky moraine and icy terrain to reach the top of the pass. The challenging climb will push you to your limits, but it is worth it. We can enjoy gorgeous views of towering mountains and landscapes.
The breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Himlung Himal (7126 m / 23,367 ft), Cheo Himal (6820 m / 22,363 ft), Gyaji Kung (7030 m / 23,065 ft), Kang Koru (6980 m / 22,904 ft), and Annapurna II (7937 m / 26,038 ft), are truly awe-inspiring. Similarly, we will pass by small herder huts to reach Yark Kharka. From here, the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail enters dense forests of rhododendron and pines.
Again, you will cross several wooden bridges over streams and start following the Dudh Koshi River. It starts to descend steeply with stone steps. Along the way, you will pass by small clearings and reach Surki Khola. You will continue trekking along the river valley through lush vegetation. The trail becomes slightly easier before reaching a small Gurung village of Gho. Due to yesterday’s tiredness, we might rest overnight at Gho, but better lodges are available at Tilije. It takes another 2-hour trek to get to Tilije. You must descend through small villages and terrace farms, passing by mani malls and archways. From Dharapani, you will take the local jeep to Besisahar. You can sit back and enjoy the views outside the window, nap, or reminisce about your beautiful journey. However, the road is bumpy and rugged. The winding road follows the Marsyangdi River, passing by villages like Tal, Chamje, Jagat, and more. Once you reach Besisahar, you will change buses and take one to Kathmandu Valley. Compared to the road to Besisahar, it is a smoother ride. The bus drives on the Prithvi Highway, following the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers. After 6 hours of bus travel, we will finally arrive in Kathmandu. Essential info for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Why Choose Manaslu Circuit Trek in 2025?
If you’re looking to avoid the commercialized and crowded trails, consider the Manaslu Circuit Trek in 2025. It is a perfect off-the-beaten-path adventure with scenic trails. Unlike popular regions like Everest and Annapurna, the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail remains untouched and unspoiled. Hence, it is an authentic Himalayan adventure into one of the remote parts of Nepal. With this trek, you do not have to worry about missing out on anything.
The winding trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River at the beginning. Then it passes through dense subtropical forests of the lower region to higher alpine meadows that show the region’s rich diversity. The trek offers spectacular views of the beautiful snow-capped mountains. From Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, to the Annapurna ranges, it is a feast for your eyes. You will stay at local teahouses and enjoy the warm hospitality of locals.
Compared to other treks of the Manaslu region, the Manaslu Circuit Trek route encircles the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft). It also includes crossing of Larkya La Pass. The pass is the highest mountain pass of the Manaslu region. From lower sub tropical region where Gurung people live to alpine meadows and glacial valleys where Tibetan settlers reside, the trek offers a lot of diversity. It is the only trek in region that does a full circuit of Mount Manaslu, high mountain pass, and include cultural and natural diversity. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is undoubtedly one of the best destinations to go to in 2025.
Key Attractions on the Manaslu Circuit Trail
The Manaslu region is a hidden gem, and the Manaslu Circuit Trail allows you to explore it. Here are the key attractions of the trekking trail:
Pungyen Gompa
One of the key attractions of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is the sacred Pungyen Gompa. It sits at an elevation of approximately 4000 m / 13,123 ft. The gompa has historical, spiritual, and cultural significance. The locals believe that the Pungyen Gompa is connected with the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, a part of Tibetan Buddhism. Hence, it is a significantly important spiritual site, and many Buddhist pilgrims come here to meditate and pray. As the gompa sits at a considerable height, you can get a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Manaslu and Pungyen Glacier. You can take a side trip to Pungyen Gompa from Sama Gaun.

Manaslu Base Camp
During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you can also take a side trip to Manaslu Base Camp from Sama Gaun. The base camp sits at an elevation of 4800 m / 15,748 ft. It is a challenging hike and takes 3 to 4 hours to reach the base camp from Sama Gaun. You will trek through alpine meadows, highland pastures, and small streams to get there. The trails are steep and rocky, and you will also have to trek past glacial moraines. It is a demanding journey, but also rewarding. The base camp offers up-close and panoramic views of Mount Manaslu, Naike Peak, and many other vistas. Likewise, you will get gorgeous views of Pungyen Glacier and icefalls. A side hike to Manaslu Base Camp is a hidden attraction of the Manaslu Circuit that you include in your itinerary.
Birendra Tal
Birendra Tal is a beautiful glacial lake that sits at an elevation of 3450 m / 11,319 ft. It lies close to Sama Gaun and is a popular side trip. On day 9, we will take a rest or acclimatization day at Sama Gaun. You can take this chance to take a short excursion to Birendra Tal. It takes only 45 minutes of hiking to access the lake. Birendra Tal is named after Nepal’s Late King Birendra. The melting glaciers of Mount Manaslu form the lake. Its turquoise water and stunning mountain vistas against the backdrop create a beautiful setting. Likewise, rocky morain walls surround Birendra Tal, giving it a magnificent look.
Larkya La Pass
When we mention the key attractions of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, we cannot miss the high mountain pass of Larkya La Pass. It is also the trek’s highest point at an altitude of 5160 m / 16,929 ft. The Pass is also the most challenging part of the journey. You will have to ascend steep and icy trails to get to the top of Larkya La. Upon reaching the top, the pass offers spectacular views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, and several other snow-capped peaks. Similarly, you can also get a great view of the surrounding landscapes.

Influence of Tibetan Buddhism & Culture
The higher altitude areas of the Manaslu Circuit Trekking route lie close to the Tibetan border, where you can witness the influence of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. The trail takes you past several traditional settlements, monasteries, and gompas. Similarly, you will come across numerous mani walls, chortens, and colorful flags along the way. The houses and monastery structures reflect traditional Tibetan architecture. The religion is deeply rooted in the locals’ lives. During festivals like the Tibetan New Year, you can be part of the celebration and witness their traditional dance, music, and rituals. The immersive cultural experience also makes it one of the major attractions of the trip.
Why Manaslu Circuit Trek is under the restricted trekking region?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek falls under the restricted trekking region because of its geopolitical nature, delicate environment, and cultural preservation. The Manaslu region lies close to the Nepal-China border and is a sensitive area for national security. Thus, the government strictly regulates the area. The circuit’s trekking route at a higher elevation also gets close to the border. So, all trekkers must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) from a licensed trekking agency. It ensures safety while promoting responsible tourism and adhering to local regulations. The restricted area status also helps to minimize environmental degradation and preserve the ancient Tibetan-Buddhist cultural heritage.
Similarly, the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail takes you deep into the remote areas of the Manaslu region that are untouched by modernization. Its pristine environment is the natural habitat of many rare and endangered species. From red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan Tahr, and Blue sheep, to Himalayan Monal, and more, are found here. Similarly, various floral species such as Blue Poppy, Himalayan Cobra Lily, Yarsagumba, etc., are also found here. The restricted area status helps to preserve the fragile ecosystem and endangered flora and fauna species.
The restricted area status adds to the “exclusivity” and thrill of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Unlike other popular trek destinations like Everest and Annapurna, there are fewer trekkers and the trails are quieter. It is far from mass tourism and unique from other open-access trails. The restricted area status makes the trek more than just a journey. It is an exploration of one of the most pristine and unpolluted areas of Nepal.
On-Season vs Off-Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Nepal has four seasons, each with its own unique charm. Seasons play a crucial role in enhancing the trekking experience. However, not all seasons are suitable for trekking. So, we have divided them into on and off-seasons and explained them to provide you with a clear picture.
On-Season
Blooming Manaslu Circuit Trail in Spring (March to May)
The spring season is one of the best time to go on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The great weather is not the only thing that makes the trek worthwhile. Spring is an active time for flora and fauna. The lower region trails pass through a dense forest of rhododendrons that are in full bloom at this time of the year. Their red, pink, and white blossoms add color to the entire landscape. Similarly, other wildflowers also bloom stunningly. You may also catch sightings of some wildlife species.
The days are sunny and warm, with longer daylight during spring. There is a low chance of rainfall, and the trails are dry. However, there can be occasional rain showers. Due to the great weather, visibility is also excellent. You can witness the stunning scenery and mountain panoramas without any obstruction.
| Months | Daytime Temperature | Nighttime Temperature |
| March | 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) | -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F) |
| April | 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) | 0°C to 8°C (32°F to 46°F) |
| May | 20°C to 31 °C (68°F to 88°F) | 5°C to 12°C (41°F to 54°F) |
Clear skies and golden colors of Autumn (September to November)
Another best season for Manaslu Circuit Trek is autumn. It is the peak trekking season in Nepal as it has the most stable weather and climatic conditions. The temperature is moderate and offers a comfortable trekking experience. There can be slight rainfall in early autumn as the monsoon has yet to leave Nepal. However, as the season progresses, the weather becomes drier.
The monsoon rain washes the dust and impurities from the atmosphere and landscapes. So, the vegetation looks fresh and crisp, and the landscape vibrant. Additionally, the golden autumn colors adds to the beauty. The season also offers visibility. It is an ideal time to enjoy the crystal-clear views of the mountain vistas. Moreover, autumn is the festive season in Nepal. Dashain and Tihar, the country’s biggest festival, fall at this time. This further enhances the Manaslu Circuit Trek experience.
| Months | Daytime Temperature | Nighttime Temperature |
| September | 15°C to 21°C (59°F to 70°F) | 2°C to 7°C (36°F to 45°F) |
| October | 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) | -2°C to 5°C (28°F to 41°F) |
| November | 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F) | -8°C to -5°C (18°F to 23°F) |
Off-Season
Monsoon rain and green valleys in Summer (June to August)
Summer is also the monsoon season in Nepal. As a result, there is heavy rainfall in the lower and hilly regions of the country. The rain makes the trails in the lower region wet, muddy, and slippery. Additionally, the leeches infest the trails. Trekking in such conditions is incredibly challenging.
The visibility is poor during summer due to heavy rain and grey clouds. Hence, there is a high chance of flights getting delayed and canceled. There is also a high risk of landslides and mudslides. So, it is not an ideal time to trek in Nepal. It is best to avoid summer for the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Frosty trails and silent mountains of Winter (December to February)
With the beginning of winter, it begins to snow at higher altitude regions. The days are shorter, and the temperature starts to drop significantly. Snow covers the entire landscapes of higher areas, making it a snowy wonderland look. However, it also makes the trails icy and slippery. It makes trekking challenging yet adventurous.
Many seasoned trekkers choose winter for trekking. It offers the best views of the snow-capped mountains and snowy landscapes. The trail is also quiet, and trekkers can enjoy the serene atmosphere best. Although the mornings and nights are cold, the days are warm and sunny. Trekking in winter is an adventure. It requires proper preparation and the right gear. Note that the Larkya La Pass can be closed due to heavy snow.

Difficulties During 15 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek
Manaslu Circuit Trek is a moderate venture, but it has its own challenges and difficulties. Here are the factors that make the trek a challenging venture:
Diverse Terrains
During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, trekkers must traverse varied terrains, ascending and descending on various trails. The route goes from lowland forest trails to rough and loose gravel trails in highland alpine meadows. Similarly, trekkers must also cross several suspension bridges, ridges, narrow paths, and icy trails of Larkya La Pass. Descending on the trails is also no easy venture. The trek is demanding and will test the trekkers’ strength, stamina, and endurance. The rocky and uneven trails can cause muscle strains, sore knees, and fatigue.
High Altitude And Risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)
The highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is 5160 meters at Larkya La Pass. Due to the high altitude, there is a lower oxygen level in the atmosphere. As a result, it is challenging to ascend to Larkya La. Trekkers physically over-exert themselves. The weather also starts to change rapidly as you move to higher elevations. High winds, sudden rain showers, and a drop in temperature can further make trekking more challenging. Therefore, trekkers must prepare for all kinds of weather conditions, including carrying the proper clothing and equipment.
It’s important to note that AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is also a risk when trekking in high-altitude areas like the Manaslu Circuit. Symptoms of AMS can include nausea, shortness of breath, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. Without proper medical treatment, it can quickly turn severe and life-threatening. The severe symptoms can include confusion, difficulty walking, and shortness of breath at rest.
Guides are trained in scoring systems to determine the severity of AMS and are experienced in providing immediate treatment. Preventative measures include gradually acclimatizing to the altitude, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and taking it slow and steady while trekking. If you experience symptoms of AMS, it’s essential to communicate with your guide and descend to a lower altitude if necessary.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance & Route
The Manaslu Circuit Trek distance is around 177 kilometers, and it lies between the Annapurna and Ganesh Himal mountains. Although overshadowed by the Annapurna circuit trek, the Manaslu circuit offers trekkers an incredible journey through Nepal’s adventurous Himalayan terrains, spanning approximately 14 to 16 days. The duration covers your arrival, departure, trekking, and acclimatization days.
CoreTreks’ 15-day Manaslu Circuit Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu (1,350 m / 4,429 ft) to Machha Khola (930 m / 3,052 ft). It takes 8 to 9 hours to drive and covers a distance of 160 km (99 miles) to reach Machha Khola. The road from Kathmandu to Arughat is smooth and well-established. From Arughat, the terrain becomes bumpy and off-road. Some trekkers choose Soti Khola (700 m / 2,297 ft) as their Manaslu Circuit Trek’s starting point. However, it will take an additional day to trek from Soti Khola.
From Machha Khola, you will begin your trekking journey. The trail will gradually ascend through subtropical forests and pass by villages like Khorlabesi, Tatopani, etc. There are also a few suspension bridges along the way as we reach Jagat (1,340 m / 4,396 ft). The distance from Machha Khola to Jagat is 15 km (9.32 miles). The trail from Jagat ascends to a rocky ridge to Salleri. Then, it descends to Sirdibas before again ascending. You will trek along the banks of the Budi Gandaki and cross the Deng River to reach Deng (1,625 m / 5,331 ft). You will cover a distance of 20 km (12.4 miles) while trekking from Jagat to Deng.

The trail continues to ascend as you leave Deng for Namrung (2,630 m / 8,629 ft). You will trek through lush forests and pass by mani stones and colorful prayer flags. The distance covered is 19 km (11.8 miles). From Namrung, you will trek to Lho (2957 m / 9,701 ft) via Lihi and Sho Gaun. There is a large mani wall at the entrance of the village. It is a relatively short trek and covers a distance of 12 km (7.5 miles). From Lho, you will trek past Shyala village to reach Sama Gaun (3530 m / 11,581 ft). The distance from Lho to Sama Gaun is only 8 km (5 miles). Sama Gaun is a vital acclimatization stop for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Tibetan Buddhism has a huge influence in the area.
After a rest day at Sama Gaun, you will continue trekking through highland pastures and alpine forests. You will cover a distance of 8 km (5 miles) to reach Samdo (3865 m / 12,678 ft). The trail keeps ascending, and you will cross several rivers. You will also cross the Larkya Bazaar and the Salka River to reach Dharamsala (4460 m / 14,634 ft). The distance from Samdo to Dharamsala is 5 km (3.1 miles). From here, the most demanding part of the trek begins. You will start ascending to Bimthang (3700 m / 12,139 ft) via Larkya La Pass (5160 m / 16,924 ft). The pass is the highest point of the trek, and the trail leading to Larkya La is steep, rugged, and snowy. You will cover a 15 km (9.3 miles) distance from Dharmasala to Bhimthang.
From Bhimthang, you will begin your descent to Tilije (2300 m / 7,546 ft). You will mostly climb downhill while crossing several rivers on suspension bridges, several settlements, and terrace farms. You will cover a distance of 14 km (8.7 miles). You will get on a jeep from Tilije and drive back to Kathmandu via Besisahar (760 m / 2,493 ft).
Permits For Manaslu Circuit Trek
As stated earlier, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the most underrated treks in Nepal. However, trekking to the remote Himalayas of the Manaslu region also comes with many challenges.
One such challenge is collecting different kinds of trek permits. Throughout the trek, trekkers must collect three permits: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit.
Considering the Manaslu region is a restricted area in Nepal, you must obtain a Special Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Jagat before crossing Sama Gaun. This permit costs USD 75 per person for the first week of December to August, and USD 15 per person per day thereafter. Meanwhile, the permit cost from September to November is USD 100 per person for the first week and USD 10 per person per day after that.
Another critical permit required for the Manaslu circuit trek is the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP). This permit covers the entire Manaslu area, starting from Philim. Authorities use the money collected from this permit to manage wildlife and ensure travelers’ safety in the Manaslu area. The MCAP costs USD 30 per person.
Similarly, the trail also passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area beyond Bhimthang and Dharapani. Thus, getting the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is also necessary. You will need this permit to cross the Dharapani check-post. It costs USD 30 per person.
Accommodation On The Manaslu Circuit Trek
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a popular teahouse trek in Nepal. The primary type of accommodation available along the route is teahouses. These are basic guesthouses run by local families. Although facilities are limited compared to the hotels in the city, they combine comfort with cultural aesthetics. So, you will get to experience authentic hospitality and the warmth of rural Nepal. Other accommodation types along the trek route are guesthouses, lodges, and homestays.
The rooms along the trek routes are typically small and furnished with two beds and a table. They are usually shared or dormitory-styled. You will find bunk beds and thin mattresses. The accommodations provide pillows and bedsheets. However, the rooms have poor insulation, so carry a sleeping bag to keep yourself warm at night. Private bathrooms on the trail are rare, and shared bathrooms are more common. Bathrooms are usually located at the end of hallways and shared among all guests. Western-style bathrooms may be available at the teahouses in the lower region, but most have Asian-style bathrooms.
Each teahouse has a common dining hall where meals are served. These communal spaces are the heart of the teahouses, where guests sit together and chat with other trekkers. You can hear new stories or share yours, and even exchange information about the trek. There is usually a huge stove in the middle of the hall for heating. Facilities like hot shower water or Wi-Fi cost extra charges, but they may be nonexistent at most places in higher regions.
The cost of accommodation you will be staying in is also highly influenced by the trekking season. During Spring and autumn, you must pay $3 to $5 per night at lower elevations. However, if you move to a higher elevation, you pay $7 to $10 per night. The higher the elevation, the more basic amenities you get, but at a higher price. Staying at these rustic but cozy teahouses is the best way to take a look at the region’s rich culture and way of life. You are not only resting your tired body but also immersing in the local tradition and warmth of the local community.
Meals & Drinks Around Manaslu Circuit
During the 15-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will get to enjoy a variety of Nepalese cuisines. International cuisines are also available, but they will become limited as you move to higher elevations. It is because most ingredients and supplies must be carried by porters, mules, or a helicopter. The rough trail and lack of infrastructure make it harder to stock a variety of ingredients. So, meals are often made with locally-sourced products.
The staple Nepalese food, Dal Bhat, is available everywhere along the trek route. The dish includes rice, lentil soup, vegetables, pickles, and salad. It is the perfect carbohydrate and protein-rich meal for a demanding trek like the Manaslu Circuit. Likewise, it is a warm and comforting food that not only fills your stomach but also your heart. Thus, expect to eat a lot of Dal Bhat while on the journey. Other food items that are available during the trek.
Food items: Tibetan bread, cornflakes, oats, porridge, tsampa, momo, chow mein, thukpa, Sherpa stew, thenduk, roti, curries, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, French fries, noodles, pasta, etc. It is best to eat a nutritious and healthy diet while on trek and avoid junk foods.
Drink options: Tea (black/ milk/ ginger/ green), coffee, soft drinks, juices, hot chocolate, and alcoholic beverages.
Note: Avoid caffeine, hot chocolate, and alcoholic beverages. Drinks like ginger or green tea and garlic soup help minimize the effects of altitude sickness.
Telephone, Internet, and Battery Charging
The Manaslu Circuit Trek route takes you to a remote part of the country. There is a lack of infrastructure and modern facilities. Accommodations in lower regions have electricity. However, those at higher elevations lack electricity and run using solar power. You can use facilities like telephone, internet, and battery charging by paying additional costs. It usually costs USD 2 per service, which can increase at higher elevations.
Telephone and internet connections can be limited in higher regions, and the signals can be poor. Wi-Fi or internet services are slow, making it more suitable for light use, such as messaging or sharing photos. You can buy local SIM cards such as NTC and NCell for better connectivity during the Manaslu Circuit Trek. These cards also provide budget-friendly data packages. Nepal Telecom (NTC) offers excellent coverage in rural regions.
Here are a few battery-saving tips that you can use during the trek:
- Carry a high-capacity power bank (10,000-20,000 mAh) for your phone and cameras.
- Carry extra spare batteries for your cameras, headlamps, and other electronic devices.
- Keep the batteries warm, as cold temperatures drain them faster. You can store the devices and batteries close to your body or in your inner jacket pockets.
- Turn off any unnecessary features or notifications on your phone and optimize your devices to save battery.
- Charge your essential devices like your phone first, then charge the optional ones.
Manaslu Round Trek Transportation
The only way to get to the Manaslu region is by roadway. There are no airways available. The starting point of our 15 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek is Machha Khola. To get there, you have two transportation options. They are explained briefly below:
Local Transportation
The local transportation option is the cheapest and the most budget-friendly option for getting to Machha Khola. There are local buses and micro-buses available for this option. Local buses accommodate large groups, i.e., 35 to 40 people. Meanwhile, micro-buses accommodate only 14 to 16 people. Using local transportation, trekkers can get an authentic experience of how Nepalese travel.

The local transportation may be cheap but slow and, frankly, uncomfortable. They have specific pickup, stops, and drop points. They make frequent stops, and locals get on and off the bus. Usually, the local buses depart in the morning time from the Gongabu Bus Park. There are also a few of them that depart in the evening. You can check with the bus counter and confirm their departure schedule. You can get the tickets directly from the Gongabu Bus Park. To secure better seat, it is advised that you get early there.
Private Transportation
For private transportation, travelers have the option of jeep. In comparison to local buses, they are faster and more comfortable. While local transportation is crowded and makes frequent stops, jeeps are more convenient. Travelers can make stops as per their requirements. One can also make stops at the places that they feel like. Jeep accommodation: 5 to 7 people at a time. It is an ideal option for groups.

The road condition from Arughat to Machha Khola is not smooth. Jeeps are the perfect mode of transportation to drive on bumpy and off-road. However, private transportation is costlier than public. Those looking to hire a private jeep can do so through their trekking agency. They will pick you up from your hotel or designated place which is convenient for you. To hire a private transportation, you can arrange through your trekking agency or from transport companies.
New Road Construction & It’s Impact
The new road construction over the past year has somewhat changed the Manaslu Circuit Trekking route. Four to five years ago, the roadway only connected Kathmandu to Arughat, so trekkers had to start their trek from Arughat, making the trek longer. However, recent road construction has connected Kathmandu with Soti Khola and Machha Khola. Now, trekkers can choose either location as the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
The recent road construction has shortened the trekking duration by a few days. Luckily, the construction has not affected the trekking routes. It remains untouched, and trekkers can still enjoy the classic Manaslu Circuit Trek route. There is an ongoing road construction in the Nyakphedi to Deng area. This road extension will also not affect the trekking route. The recent flood at the end of September 2024 has affected the road to Maccha Khola. So, the road condition is poor at present. But the local authorities are working on improving the road condition.
The new road construction has improved access to the Manaslu Circuit Trek. It has blended the modern infrastructure with ancient trails. Although some may miss the full-length trek journey, the trail remains untouched from Jagat and upwards. Many trekkers appreciate the convenience of the roadway to the starting point, from where they can still experience the remote and authentic Manaslu Circuit Trek experience. Despite the recent road construction, the trekking trail offers the same unspoiled natural beauty, adventure, and cultural richness as before.

Travel Insurance
The Manaslu trek is a remote and high-altitude adventure where unforeseen situations may arise. Hence, travel insurance is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Most trekking destinations in Nepal, including the Manaslu Circuit, lie in remote areas that lack proper infrastructure and facilities. It is a high-altitude journey with the risk of altitude sickness. There is also a risk of injuries or accidents due to unforeseen circumstances. There are only a few small health posts that provide first-aid services. A helicopter rescue operation is the only way to provide immediate medical assistance during an emergency. However, the helicopter rescue and medical bills are not cheap.
Travel insurance provides a financial safety net and peace of mind during these times. It must cover high-altitude treks, trip postponement or cancellation, baggage loss or damage, medical bills, emergency expenses, and helicopter rescue operations. Many types of insurance are available, so read the terms and policies well before getting one.
CoreTreks’ 15 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek does not include travel insurance. However, as a trusted trek agency, we are ready to recommend reliable insurance options if needed. Trekkers must get one before the journey and provide us with a copy. We will use your insurance to provide immediate rescue and medical assistance in an emergency.
Things to know
Guide & Porter
As the Manaslu Circuit Trek requires a restricted area permit, trekkers must hire a licensed guide. The guides are crucial to the journey, helping trekkers navigate the trails and ensuring their safety. Experienced guides know the trails and terrain well and provide valuable insights into the region. Similarly, they are also trained in first aid, so they are the first responders in times of emergency. Hiring a guide not only makes the journey safe but also enriching and fulfilling.
Porters help to make your trek more comfortable. They relieve you from physical strain by carrying your backpack for you. Unlike guides, hiring a porter is not mandatory, but we highly recommend you do. The trails of Manaslu Circuit are demanding. You will have to make steep ascend and descend on varied terrains. Doing so with a heavy backpack can cause over-exertion and increase the risk of injuries and accidents. So, for a comfortable and baggage-free trekking experience, hire a porter.
The cost of hiring a guide for the Manaslu Circuit Trek is around USD 25 to 35 per day. Likewise, hiring a porter costs around USD 20 to 30 per day. CoreTreks’ 15-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek package includes an experienced, English-speaking guide and a porter (one for two trekkers).
Nepalese Currency and Payment
There are plenty of money exchange centers around Kathmandu. They visibly put the day’s exchange rate, so you do not have to worry about transparency. You can also exchange the currency at financial institutions and banks. But, these institutes will charge service commissions of around 4% or more. Another option is to use the ATMs. You can withdraw Nepalese rupees up to NPR 35,000. ATM withdrawal charge is NPR 500.
You should exchange sufficient currency for the trek, as you will need cash for personal expenses. There are no ATMs or credit card facilities along the route to Manaslu Circuit. The locals also prefer cash for payment. As the region is remote, there are also no money exchange centers.
Manaslu VS ACT, Which Circuit Trek Should You Choose From?
Both Manaslu Circuit Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek (ACT) have unique appeal and challenges. You need to understand both treks to make an informed decision on which one is more suitable. It must also match your requirements and budget.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek has a moderate grade difficulty. It takes 10 to 15 days to complete the entire journey that lies in the Gorkha District of the Manaslu Region. The trek covers a distance of 177 km. The average trekking hour is 4 to 6 hours per day. During the trek, you will have to ascend and descend on steep trails on varied terrains in the country’s restricted area. The highest point of the trek is 5160 meters at Larkya La Pass. The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu, which is also known as killer mountain, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal Range, Shringi Himal, and many more. The trek cost range from USD 900 to 1700 per person.
Unlike commercialized treks like the Annapurna Circuit Trek, the Manaslu Circuit is less crowded and more tranquil. The location is more remote and only accessible via roadway. Its pristine nature and scenery are different than popular regions like the Everest and Annapurna regions. Moreover, you will get to experience Tibetan Buddhism, culture, and customs.

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a strenuous venture that lies in the Gandaki Province of the Annapurna region. The trek covers an area of 23 km and takes 12 to 21 days to complete. The average trekking hours is 5 to 6 hours a day. Likewise, the highest point of the trek is 5416 meters at Thorong La Pass. The ACT covers the entire Annapurna massif. Hence, you will witness gorgeous views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchre (Fishtail), Manaslu, Gangapurna, Tilicho, and more. Annapurna Circuit Trek costs from USD 1,000 to 2,000 per person, depending on the itinerary.

For shorter and moderate treks, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is ideal. Its cost is also relatively lower, and it is suitable for beginners. Based on your requirements, you can choose the one that best suits you.

I didn’t have much time to prepare in detail, and I wasn’t sure about the weather, so I left everything to the last minute. In the end, everything turned out great! Before the trip, I met with Neem, who helped me buy an eSIM (though Ncell doesn’t work as well in the mountains as Namaste). It’s not as easy to get one in Kathmandu as you might think!I also had a wonderful guide, Bhim, who took care of everything for me, so I didn’t have to worry about a thing. He even bought fruit for me, knowing better which ones were ripe. The choice of teahouses wasn’t fixed in advance, and it was nice that he let me decide — although, even then, I preferred to rely on his experience. In short, the trip was a success, and I truly recommend this company and these people.Agi from UK.Posted on Katarzyna SVerified Amazing experience We would like to thank you very much for organizing a wonderful trip.
