Gosaikunda Trek Routes

The journey to holy Godaikunda Lake begins with a scenic 7-hour drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche. Along the way, we will pass numerous tiny rural villages, rivers, hills, and waterfalls. From Dhunche, our trek in the Langtang region will begin. We will hike right into the Langtang National Park. It is a beautiful journey through the rhododendrons, oaks, firs, and bamboo forests.

We will reach Chandanbari village, home to several ancient monasteries and Nepal’s oldest Yak Cheese Factory. From here, we will begin our gradual ascend to Lauribinayak. The gorgeous view of the Langtang range and surrounding peaks will keep us company. After crossing the Lauribinayak Pass, the trail will lead us to a stunning valley. It takes another 3 hours to reach the Gosaikunda Lake.

The descent from Gosaikunda is easy, as we will retrace the familiar paths. We will head back to Chandanbari and then to Dhunche, which is also the end point of our trek. From Dhunche, we will drive back to Kathmandu.

How Hard is Gosaikunda Trek?

The Gosaikunda Trek is a moderately easy trekking destination in Nepal. Except for some sections, the trails do not have particularly steep ascending and descending sections. In comparison, the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is more challenging and demanding. Trekkers should be capable of walking 6 to 7 hours daily and have excellent physical fitness to participate in the trek.

Gosaikunda Lake
Gosaikunda Lake

Ascending to higher altitudes is the challenging part of the trek. With the growing elevation, the terrain becomes rougher and physically demanding. Additionally, the oxygen level starts thinning, and trekkers can succumb to altitude sickness. Therefore, it is crucial to acclimatize and take proper precautions.

The Gosaikunda Trek offers stunning year-round scenery and cultural experiences, but the ideal seasons are spring (March- May) and autumn (September- November). Here's a detailed breakdown of each season's pros and cons:

Spring (March-May):

  • Pros: Spring has pleasant weather with cool days and warm nights. The maximum temperature ranges from 18-30°C max while the minimum is 6-18°C Celsius.
  • Cons: There is a chance for occasional rain showers and the potential for higher-altitude snow.
  • Highlights: The landscape is lusciously green with blooming rhododendrons. There is a possibility of spotting wildlife like red pandas.

Summer (June-August):

  • Pros: The landscape is vibrant with Lush greenery and potentially fewer crowds.
  • Cons: Monsoon season with frequent rain (400-500mm/month). Hence, the trails are slippery, and landslides are dangerous.
  • Highlights: You can witness the gull-flow waterfalls, vibrant vegetation, and occasional clear days with stunning views.

Autumn (September-November):

  • Pros: It is one of the most popular trek seasons, with clear skies, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures. The maximum temperature ranges from 20-28°C while the minimum is 6-10°C.
  • Cons: There are only fewer wildflowers compared to spring.
  • Highlights: The trails are dry and offer mountain views. They also provide a comfortable trekking experience and are free of mosquitoes and leeches.

Winter (December-February):

  • Pros: Enjoy unique winter landscapes with fewer crowds on the trail.
  • Cons: The maximum temperature is 18-22°C, and the minimum is 2-6°C. There is a high chance of snowfall with icy and slippery trails.
  • Highlights: Witness the frozen lakes and waterfalls. There are stunning snow-capped peaks and a tranquil atmosphere.

Choosing the Right Season:

  • For pleasant weather, blooming flowers, and wildlife spotting: Spring (March-April)
  • For comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and dry trails: Autumn (September-November)
  • For adventure and unique winter landscapes: Winter (December-February, with proper preparation)

Additional Considerations:

  • Early June: If you prefer summer but dislike rain, consider early June for potentially drier conditions.
  • Mid-December: Winter officially arrives after mid-December, so plan accordingly with proper gear.

Ultimately, the best season for the Gosaikunda Trek depends on your preferences and priorities. You should consider the above factors to make an informed decision about the trek. This will help you align with your expectations for a memorable trekking experience.

Trek Difficulty

The Gosaikunda Lake Trek is moderately challenging, with easy ascending and descending trails. There are few sections of the route where trekkers must tackle steep sections. Similarly, it is a short trek that takes 7 to 10 days. Although the trekking trails are moderate, trekkers will require proper physical and mental preparation. It can be physcially straining to walk 6   to 7 hours daily on varied terrains.

The most challenging part of the trek is ascending to Gosaikunda Lake, the highest point of the trek at an elevation of 4,380 meters. The terrain is rough, and ascending can become physically demanding. Due to the high elevation, the air in the atmosphere begins to get thinner, causing some trekkers to experience symptoms of altitude sickness.

Another difficult part of the Gosaikunda Lake Trek is the unpredictable weather in the higher region. It can change at any time. Similarly, trekkers should also prepare adequate clothing, equipment, and gear. The unpredictable challenges and lack of proper facilities can stress the trekkers. Therefore, trekkers must prepare physically and mentally for the trek despite its moderate difficulty.

Accommodation and Food

Teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses are the most common accommodations in the region. These accommodations provide basic but comfortable lodging and meal facilities. The rooms are usually twin-sharing. The accommodation provides beds, blankets, pillows, and bedsheets. Similarly, the bathrooms are usually communal, but a few can have rooms with attached bathrooms.

Due to the lack of infrastructure, it is difficult to find luxurious services. You must pay extra for services like hot water/ shower, internet, charging electronic devices, etc. As you move to higher altitudes, the facilities will get more basic. Services like internet and hot water can be non-existent, so manage your expectations. Core Treks will arrange your stay at a safe and cozy guest house during the trek.

dal bhat tarkari
Dal Bhat Tarkari

During the trek, you will eat a lot of dal-bhat, a staple Nepalese cuisine. It is a nutritious meal that consists of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, curries, and pickles. The menus can include bread (chapati/ Tibetan), cornflakes, porridge, eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, soup, Sherpa stew, momo, pasta, curries, sandwiches, noodles, pizza, etc. As locals run the accommodations, you can also taste the local delicacies.

Gosaikunda Festival Trek: Immersing in Culture and Spirituality

Nepal's vibrant festivals offer a unique window into the country's rich cultural tapestry. The Janai Purnima celebration at Gosaikunda Lake holds immense significance for Hindus and Buddhists.

The Essence of Janai Purnima:

  • Held on the full moon day of August: This auspicious occasion attracts devotees from all over Nepal and beyond.
  • Spiritual Significance: Hindus observe this day by chanting mantras, changing their sacred threads (Janai), and receiving blessings from priests.
  • Symbolic Observances: Rakshya Bandhan, a sacred red-yellow thread, is tied around wrists for protection. The lake, believed to have a connection to the Kumbheshwar Temple in Kathmandu, holds an image of Lord Shiva at its center.

Experiencing the Festival:

  • Customized Gosaikunda Festival Trek: We offer specially designed treks that coincide with the Janai Purnima festivities, allowing you to witness these traditions firsthand.
  • Immerse in the Cultural Tapestry: Witness the fervor of devotees, participate in the rituals (if permitted), and gain a deeper understanding of Nepali culture and spirituality.

  • First-aid kit: Be prepared for minor injuries or ailments.
  • Personal medication: Carry any prescribed medications you might need.
  • Snacks and energy bars: Maintain your energy levels during the trek.

Remember: Packing appropriately for the expected weather conditions is essential for a safe and enjoyable Gosaikunda trek. Planning and preparing for potential variations can ensure a comfortable and memorable adventure.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for the Gosaikunda Lake Trek as it is a high-altitude trek with a risk of altitude sickness. The trekking trails take you into the remote region of Langtang, which lacks proper infrastructure and medical facilities. Hence, in case of emergencies, helicopter rescue is the only option. Expenses for such rescues and evacuations can be hefty. Travel insurance will come to the rescue. It provides financial security to the trekkers.

You must provide us with the travel insurance certificate before the trek. It should cover high-altitude treks, medical expenses such as altitude sickness, and emergency expenses, including helicopter rescues. We also advise you to get an insurance policy that covers trip postponement, cancellation, luggage/ device loss or damage, theft, etc. We will use your insurance policy for quick and immediate rescue operations in an emergency.

Altitude Sickness And Remedies

Altitude sickness usually occurs when trekkers ascend to a high altitude rapidly above 2500 meters. At higher elevations, the oxygen level and air pressure begin to decrease. Hence, breathing becomes difficult, and the body experiences discomfort due to a lack of oxygen. The symptoms of altitude sickness can be mild to severe and life-threatening. Since Gosaikunda Lake Trek takes you to a maximum altitude of 4,380 meters, there is the risk of attitude-related sickness.

The mild form of altitude sickness is Acute mountain sickness (AMS). Symptoms include nausea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, breathing difficulty, loss of appetite, swelling, and difficulty sleeping. The severe forms of altitude sickness are High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). It includes symptoms such as severe headaches, loss of coordination, disorientation, chest tightness or pain, rapid heartbeat, pink forty liquid around the mouth and nose, etc.

Take a look at some of the remedies for Gosaikunda Lake Trek:

  • Ascend to higher elevations gradually. For beginners, it is best to ascend to 100 meters per day as it allows your body to adapt to the growing elevations.
  • Take acclimatization day to allow your body to adjust to the high elevation, humidity, and surroundings.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcoholic beverages. Hot lemon drinks and garlic soups help ease the symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Eat a high-carb and high-protein diet while on trek. Avoid eating junk foods or smoking tobacco excessively.
  • Avoid doing heavy exercises while on a trek. Heavy sweating can cause fluid loss and dehydration. Additionally, heavy exercises also require more oxygen from your body, which can make breathing difficult. However, light workouts, warm-ups, and yoga can help you during the trek.
  • Medications like Acetazolamide and Diamox can ease the symptoms of altitude sickness. However, we advise you to consult your healthcare professionals about the medicines before the trek.
  • If you start experiencing altitude sickness symptoms, rest immediately and keep yourself hydrated. You should also take the medications. However, if the symptoms persist, you must descend to lower altitudes immediately.
