Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour in Nepal Overview

Being the birthplace to Lord Buddha, Nepal is a major attraction for the devotee of Gautama Buddha. The country consist of hundreds medication caves, stupas, and monasteries. The monasteries in Nepal is home to thousands of monks from six to sixty years old. They have devoted their entire life to study and practice the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. The monasteries are located in mostly around the peaceful area far from the city’s hassle.

Amongst many, we will be visiting Kopan Monastery and Namo Buddha Monastery to start our Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour in Nepal. Kopan Monastery is situated on the Kopan hill, just north of the ancient Buddhist town of Boudhanath. The monastery is dominated by a magnificent Bodhi tree. The monastery was once the home of the astrologer to the king of Nepal.

Once we are done touring Kopan Monastery, we will visit Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery also known as Namo Buddha. The Tibetan Buddhist monastery is situated at 40km southeast of Kathmandu. It is home to more than 250 monks and was officially opened in 2008 as a school for young monks. The place is beautifully designed and painted attracting thousands of visitors annually.

To wrap up our tour in Kathmandu, we will be visiting Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and Boudhanath Stupa. Bhaktapur Durbar Square, located about half an hour drive away from Kathmandu, is a reflection of Newari arts and architecture. The square contains some of the historic designs. Whereas, Patan Durbar Square is famous due to the fact that royal Malla Kings used to reside there. The square is filled with temples such as Krishna Mandir, Bhimsen temple and more. And for our final Kathmandu pilgrimage, we will be touring Boudhanath Stupa. The stupa is rich in Buddhist symbolism considered as the largest stupa in Nepal. It is situated on the eastern side of Kathmandu.

Our next destination will be Lumbini via Pokhara. On our way to Lumbini, we will be visiting Sarankot for the golden sunrise which is located only a few kilometres from Pokhara. During our time in Pokhara we will also visit some of its major attractions such as Davis Fall, Gupteshor, Bindabashini temple, World Peace Stupa and Tibetan Refugee Camp. Upon reaching Lumbini, we will spend two nights there exploring and touring the place. It has a number of older Buddhist temples, including Mayadevi Temple, and various new temples. According to Buddhist tradition, this is the place where Queen Mahamayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama also known as Buddha. There are monasteries that belong to certain countries such as Germany, Thailand, Korea, and China.

At the end of our Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour in Nepal, we will wrap things up at Kathmandu. You will have a day of free time which you can use for either touring or relaxing. Day 01

Arrival In Kathmandu & Transfer To The Hotel

One of our representative from CoreTreks will be sent to pick you up from the airport. S/he will escort you to the hotel of your choice. Since this is the first day of your tour, we will spend some time briefing and discussion about our coming days of the tour. The overnight stay will be at the hotel.

Visit To Kopan Monastery And Namo Buddha Monastery

After having breakfast, we will drive to Kopan Monastery which is located at north of the ancient Buddhist town, of Boudhanath. The monastery is made up of beautiful paintings and designs all over. After visiting Kopan, we will head towards Namo Buddha Monastery also known as Thrangu Tashi Yangtse. The monastery is home to 250 monks and is beautifully designed and located in a quiet place. In the evening, we will participate in a Puja and send our prayers. Once we are done, we will head to the Hotel which belongs to the Monastery for an overnight stay.

Visit To Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square & Bouddhanath Stupa

After having breakfast, we will drive to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The square is beautifully designed and has been known for its art and architecture for a long time. It reflects the ancient architecture which can still be seen around different places in Nepal.

Then we drive for around half an hour to Patan Durbar Square. The square is situated at the center of the city of Lalitpur. The palace is an attraction to many due to the fact that royal Malla Kings used to reside there. Besides that, the square is also a beautiful example of Newar architecture. Krishna Mandir, Bhimsen Temple, Bhimsen Temple, etc. are some of the temples that we will be visiting to.

After a successful visit to Patan Durbar Square, we head towards Bouddhanath Stupa. Rich in Buddhist symbolism, the stupa is considered the largest stupa in Nepal. It is located on the eastern side of Kathmandu. The place is an important pilgrimage for Tibetan Buddhists as well as local people. Then we head back to the hotel to spend the night after such a long and tiring day.

Drive To Pokhara & Overnight Stay At Pokhara

We start early today since we have a long drive to Pokhara of about 7 hours. After having our breakfast, we start our drive. Enjoying the curved highways and beautiful scenery as we head outside the valley. The drive to Pokhara is somewhat thrilling experience in itself. There will be several break stops before finally arriving to Pokhara. The drive is pretty exhausting, so we spend the night at the hotel.

Optional Trip: You could also choose to go rafting in Trishuli River if it’s something that excites you, the cost will be $40 per person inclusive of transport, 2 hours of rafting and lunch

Visit To Sarangkot & Sightseeing In Pokhara

Early morning drive to Sarankot from the hotel in order to see the sunrise. The driving is approximately 45 minutes to reach Sarankot. After enjoying our morning with beautiful wide view of the mountains we get back to the hotel. We will have breakfast and prepare for the Pokhara tour. Pokhara contains numerous tourism destination and is widely famous among the locals too. Davis Fall, Gupteshor, Bat Cave, Bindabishini Temple, World Peace Stupa and Tibetan Refugee Camp are some of the major destination within Pokhara that we will be visiting to. Our overnight stay will be at the hotel.

Drive To Lumbini

We start early. After having our breakfast, we will be driving for around 6 hours considering the distance from Pokhara to Lumbini is 203 km. Since we will spend majority of the time traveling, we will not have enough time for a whole tour of Lumbini. After a peaceful evening, we will spend our night at the monastery and prepare for tomorrow’s tour.

Lumbini Exploration – Visiting Different Monasteries

Today we will be exploring all that Lumbini has to offer. After having our breakfast, we will start our tour by visiting different monasteries. There are different monasteries belonging to different countries such as Germany, Thailand, Korea, and China. Besides that, we will be visiting the ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi tree, an ancient bathing pond, the Ashokan pillar, and the Mayadevi Temple where the birthplace of Buddha is located. Our overnight stay will be at a monastery at Lumbini.

Drive To Kathmandu

Today we have a long drive ahead. After breakfast, we hop in the car and start our journey back to Kathmandu. The majority of this day will be spent driving as we have to cover around 295 km of distance from Lumbini to Kathmandu. We stop at a few places for snacks and then we continue. After successfully reaching Kathmandu, we prepare for tomorrow’s sightseeing in Kathmandu and have dinner. Overnight stay will be at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Optional Tour Day

This day is especially reserved for optional touring. On this day, you make the decision. Whether you want to experience an hour long scenic Mountain Flight, cable car ride to Chandragiri, or relax inside the Garden of Dreams, it’s all up to your preferences. Better yet, you could enjoy the day touring and shopping around Thamel Bazaar. We end the day with a delightful farewell dinner. Overnight stay will be at the hotel.

After bidding our goodbyes a representative from CoreTreks will transport you to Tribhuvan International Airport around 3 hours before your flight departure.
