Manaslu Circuit Trek In April

Manaslu Circuit Trek in April

Trekking is not just about walking long distances or reaching high points. It’s also about escaping busy crowds and enjoying the peace of nature. It is as much an inner journey as it is an outer journey. Seeking solace in crowded trails of popular treks won’t help if your goal is self-discovery. And, it shouldn’t be in the harsher winter or summer conditions. You need a perfect balance between difficulty, moderate weather, and quieter routes. Manaslu Circuit Trek matches all the conditions in April, allowing you to have an introspective journey.

Manaslu Circuit lies in the Manaslu Conservation Area and is one of the least explored trails in Nepal. Manaslu Circuit Trek in April offers more than just a physical challenge; it is a chance to explore nature in its rawest form. This month, nature comes alive; animals come out of their abode, just like you. The absence of large crowds, even in the peak seasons, immerses you in the vibrant landscapes. The majestic views of Mount Manaslu, Annapurna Ranges, Ganesh Himal, and Shringi Himal fit in your brains as you reach Larkya La Pass.

The moderate temperature, longer sunshine hours, and predictable weather make navigating through the somewhat complex topography comfortable. Let’s explore why April is ideal for the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Why Manaslu Circuit Trek In April?

Fantastic view of the Himalayas

April’s clear skies offer an unobstructed view of the mountains along the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The winter months, from December to February, leave a fresh blanket of snow on the high Himalayas, and by April, this snow has not yet melted. When the spring morning sun shines on the peaks, the mountains look clean, bright, and beautiful. As you walk across the rocky trails of Manaslu, you will see many mountains since the trek lies between the Ganesh Himal and Annapurna ranges.

Weather Of Manaslu Circuit Trek

One of the major highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek this month is the stunning open view of Manaslu, which stands at 8,163 meters and is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. During their journey, trekkers are rewarded with clear views of Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, Hiunchuli, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Ngadi Chuli. When you reach the highest point of the trek, Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters), you can see a breathtaking view of the Annapurna Range.

Stable and Pleasant Weather

April is the transitional month between winter and monsoon in Nepal. The extreme cold of winter has passed, while the summer rains and intense heat have not yet arrived. During this time, the weather conditions on the Manaslu Circuit are mild, with temperatures that are neither too cold nor too hot. Heavy rainfall is unlikely, though occasional light and scattered showers may occur. Snowfall is uncommon even in higher areas like Manaslu Base Camp or Lyrkya La Pass. Daytime temperatures in the lower regions range from 10°C to 20°C. As you ascend to higher elevations, temperatures will drop, potentially reaching as low as -10°C at night.

Extended Daylight and Sunny Days

The average length of the daytime is 12 to 13 hours. The sun rises at around 5:40 am and sets at around 6:30 pm. The extended daylight provides trekkers ample time to trek at a relaxed pace with proper time for rest and lunch. They don’t have to hurry right after they wake up to reach their next destination, like in the Winter months when the days are shorter. They can explore the Manaslu region without the stress of losing the light. Moreover, April receives an average of 7-9 hours of sunshine daily, warming the day.

The lower altitude ranges from 10°C to 20°C and enjoys sunny days. These conditions are ideal for trekking as you don’t have to carry a bulk of clothing and gear and don’t bother about reaching the stop point in time.

An ideal time for flora and fauna Exploration

The Manaslu Circuit Trek lies in the Manaslu Conservation Area, renowned for its ecological diversity. The area is home to over 2,000 species of plants, 33 species of mammals, 110 species of birds, and 11 species of butterflies. During your trek, you will encounter 11 different types of forests. April is the spring season, which restores the trail and its surroundings as the flora and fauna come to life.

Along the trail, you will encounter blooming Rhododendron forests, oaks, pines, and fir trees. Wildflowers like Gentian, Aster, Edelweiss, and Primroses add vibrant colors to nature. Wildlife activity also peaks in April. Sightings of Himalayan musk deer, blue sheep, and Himalayan Thar are possible. If you’re fortunate, you might even have an opportunity to witness the endangered Red Panda. In April, birds like eagles, vultures, snow pigeons, and Himalayan monal (danphe) are common in Manaslu.

Vibrant Surrounding

April offers trekkers the vibrant and lively scenery of the Manaslu region. Nature turns into a painting of colors; white, red, and pink rhododendrons, and wildflowers in purple and yellow cover the trail. The lush green forests add to the beauty of flowers. The melted snow from the Himalayas flows in the rushing streams this month. The turquoise waters of Birendra Lake and other lakes amidst the mountains and hills are a sight to behold.

Villages along the trail are immersed in agricultural activities. The locals are out on the farms, welcoming and preparing to welcome the newer crops. April is also the month of New Year, according to Nepalese Calander. So, the vibrancy of the surroundings increases tenfold during the celebration, making a trek in the Manaslu region one of the most memorable trekking experiences for anyone.

What Makes the Manaslu Circuit Trek Special in April?

Manaslu Circuit In April

At first glance, the Manaslu Trek in Spring might seem like any other trek. However, this is not the case. Unlike the Everest Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the Manaslu Circuit trek is less crowded, even in peak periods like April and May. It is a relatively unexplored trek that was opened to foreign nationals in 1991 AD. The quiet trails and calm surroundings make this high mountain trek special for people who want to discover themselves.

The trails and tea houses of ABC and EBC are often crowded with trekkers during the peak spring season. Because Manaslu is in a remote area, it gives a deep and peaceful experience. Trekkers can enjoy the unspoiled natural beauty without anyone around to disturb them. They can take their time to explore the culturally rich villages and towering Himalayas and connect with nature without distractions.

Is it difficult to trek to Manaslu Circuit in April?

Is Manaslu Circuit Difficult?

April is the peak time for trekking in Nepal, including Manaslu Circuit Trek, and doesn’t bring any notable challenges in the trek. However, the difficulty level of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is moderate because of the longer duration, risk of altitude sickness, and trail conditions. Here are some aspects that determine the Manaslu Circuit Trek difficulty;

Altitude Sickness

Even though April is one of the best months for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, it can still be hard because of the high altitude. The highest point of Manaslu Trek is Larkya La Pass, at an altitude of 5,160 meters. Reaching such elevation poses a risk of altitude sickness, even though the temperature is mild. So, it is essential to separate your time for acclimatization.

Long Trekking Duration

The 177-km trek takes about 15 days to complete. Each day involves 7-8 hours of trekking, which can be physically and mentally exhausting. While walking longer in the lower region might not seem that challenging, it becomes daunting at higher altitudes. Once you cross Samdo and head towards Larkya La Pass through Dharmashala, the temperature significantly decreases, and the risk of altitude sickness becomes prominent. In such conditions, walking for such long hours can take a toll on your body and mind.

Unpredictable Weathers

While April is the best time for trekking due to its mild and stable weather, this is only true for the lower regions. Conditions near the pass can still be unpredictable. Sudden strong winds and light snowfalls are always a probability. Therefore, you are required to bring warm and insulated clothes for such instances.

Rugged Trails

Although the trails are dry in April, risks still exist due to their rugged nature. As you walk, you’ll admire towering peaks like Manaslu but also encounter narrow, steep paths that require extra caution with your footing. Climbing to higher altitudes demands both balance and stamina. The advantage of this time of year is that the trails are less crowded, providing the space and time you need to progress.
