Langtang Valley Trek Overview

The Langtang Valley Trek is a mesmerizing journey into the Himalayas that is ideal for all types of trekkers. It lies about 80 km north of the capital and is easily accessible by roadway. This underrated but unique trek to the Valley of Glaciers offers enriching, awe-inspiring moments to last a lifetime.

One of the first things that makes Langtang Valley Trek popular among trekkers is its tranquil off-the-beat paths. Compared to some of the most famous trek destinations, such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit Trek, etc., there are only a few trekkers on Langtang Valley trails. Therefore, it is a perfect getaway from bustling city life into the lap of nature.

During this relatively short trek, you will slowly walk through the dense subtropical forests of rhododendrons, oaks, and firs to highland meadows and green pastures. Similarly, while walking on rugged terrains, stunning views of the snow-capped mountain vistas, glaciers, and moraines will grace you. You can view Mount Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh, and many more. Since the trails lie within the Langtang National Park, you may get an opportunity to encounter rare animals like red panda, musk deer, and more.

This east-west running valley is home to mostly Tamang and Sherpa ethnic communities. Therefore, the trek is an opportunity to learn about their unique and rich culture, traditions, customs, and lifestyle. You can also try the local yak cheese and other local delicacies. The Langtang Valley is also famous for its cultural heritage tour.

Where is Langtang Valley Located?

The Langtang Valley lies about 80 kilometers north of Kathmandu. It shares its borders with Tibet in Southwest China and is within the Langtang National Park in Rasuwa district of Bagmati Zone. The GPS coordinates of Langtang is 28° 12′ 59″ N, 85° 30′ 22″ E. The route to Langtang Valley goes through dense forests, stone paths, settlements, meadows, pastures, glaciers, and moraines.

Langtang Village

The valley is bowl-shaped, and the country’s longest glacier, the Langtang Glacier, lies here. It is also home to other glaciers like Yala and Lirung glaciers. Hence, the valley got its name as the Valley of Glaciers. Its off-beat and scenic trails have made Langtang Valley Trek one of the popular trek destinations after Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

The only way to access the Langtang Valley is by roadway via Syabrubensi. The road connecting the capital city and Syabrubensi is off-road and bumpy. Depending on the condition, it can take 7 to 8 hours to drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi. During the rainy season, it becomes muddy and dangerous. There are no airways available to access Langtang Valley.

Langtang Valley Trek Cost

The Langtang Valley Trek package usually costs around USD 700 to USD 900 per person. Various factors influence the cost, such as the duration of the trek, itinerary, season, services, and number of people in the group. The price will increase if you add more services and when you trek during peak season. Meanwhile, there are discounts when you trek in a large group and the off-season.

CoreTreks’ 10-Day Langtang Valley Trek package includes accommodations, transportation, meals, permits, guides, and porter fees. However, the trekker is responsible for additional costs, including tipping guides and porters. Our service includes private airport transfers, a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi, and a return by local transport. Your accommodation in Kathmandu will be in a three-star hotel (two nights) on a standard twin-sharing basis. Similarly, your accommodation during the trek will be at teahouses (7 nights) on a twin-sharing basis.

The package also includes three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and tea/ coffee during the trek. It also includes permits (TIMS and Langtang National Park permits), an experienced guide, and porters (one porter for two people).  Other expenses such as visa, travel insurance, trek equipment, souvenir shopping, and meals/ drinks other than standard ones with the package are trekkers’ own personal expenses.

Additional Cost Factors For Langtang Valley Trek

Transportation Cost

The transportation available from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the starting point of our trek, is by local bus or jeep. There are no airways connecting the two places.

Local buses are the most common mode of transportation used by locals and the most affordable. They cost around USD 5 to 10 per person, one way. However, they are usually crowded and uncomfortable. Local buses also make frequent stops along the way so people can get on and off.

Meanwhile, jeeps are more expensive than local buses. You can take a private or shared jeep. A one-way trip by private jeep usually costs around USD 120 to USD 150. Meanwhile, the shared jeep is around USD 15 per person for one-way. However, they are more comfortable and convenient. They are also faster than local buses, and you can make stops as needed. A jeep accommodates about seven people at a time. You can rent a private jeep and split the costs if you have a small group.

Guide & Porter Cost

As of April 2023, the new trekking rule in Nepal has made it mandatory to hire a guide for most trekking destinations, including the Langtang region. Hiring a porter for the trek is optional but highly recommended.

The cost of hiring a guide can range from USD 20 to 30 per day. Meanwhile, the cost of hiring a porter ranges from USD 15 to 20 per day. The price can vary depending on the trek agency, duration, and season. Usually, hiring an experienced guide can be slightly higher. The cost does not include tips. Although tipping is not compulsory, it is a highly appreciated gesture. It is a gesture of gratitude for their hard work and good service, so we recommend you tip your guide and porter. Group trekkers can tip collectively, and solo trekkers can tip separately.

Extra Cost On Amenities

Aside from transportation, meals, accommodations, guides, and porter fees, trekkers must consider various other personal expenses while calculating their budget. These extra costs or personal expenses include charging devices, internet/ WiFi, hot water/ shower, personal equipment, souvenir shopping, etc.

The accommodations along the Langtang Valley Trek route provide services such as internet, hot water/ shower, charging, etc., for additional cost. Generally, the service costs around USD 2 per service, but it can increase at higher altitudes. This is because the route lies in a remote area, and higher areas might not be electricity. Many accommodations use solar power to provide the facilities mentioned above. As a result, trekkers must pay extra costs.

Our 10-day Langtang Valley Trek does not include these extra expenses. Therefore, trekkers must carry sufficient cash for the journey. They must also obtain the visa and travel insurance by themselves.

Tibetan Buddhism greatly influences their culture as they are believed to have migrated from Tibet centuries ago. The word “Tamang” originated from the Tibetan language in which “Ta” means “horse” and “Mang” refers to “traders.”

During the Langtang Valley Trek, you will experience a unique blend of Nepalese and Tibetan culture. The Tibetan groups in higher areas and the Tamang people share several cultural practices. You can see the influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the region’s monasteries, gompas, stupas, and mani walls. The famous Kyanjin Gompa, which reflects the impact of the religion, is one of the biggest monasteries in the Langtang region. It is also the region’s spiritual hub.  During the trek, you will witness the locals’ unique culture. Likewise, you can also taste the local cuisines and enjoy warm Nepalese hospitality.

Tea House Around Langtang Valley Trek

Teahouses are the most common and standard accommodations available along the route of Langtang Valley Trek. They are rustic and simple, offering only basic services and limited amenities. Although simple, these teahouses are cozy and comfortable. Local families run these places, so you can experience a homely environment and warm hospitality.

Tea House Around Langtang Valle

Most rooms are on a sharing basis with limited furniture. The teahouses will provide beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Bathrooms in most teahouses are also usually shared in an Asian squat style. Dining halls are also communal, and it is common to see massive stone stoves there. These stone stoves heat the room, and trekkers can eat or chitchat around them. The higher you go, the more basic the facilities become. You do not have to worry about safety as these teahouses are completely secure places to stay.

These teahouses also serve meals to their guests. There are various options, from local dishes to international cuisines. The average cost of teahouses per night ranges from NPR 500 to 1000 per person. You must pay extra costs for internet, charging, hot showers, etc., so carry sufficient cash for the journey.

The accommodations along the trail have Wi-Fi/ internet services, but the connectivity is poor and unreliable. It is not suitable for heavy data-intensive work. Mobile connectivity is also unstable. The higher you go, the more unstable or limited the communication & internet facilities may become.

Accommodations in cities like Kathmandu offer free Wi-Fi/ internet services. However, since the trekking route is in remote areas without proper infrastructure, you must pay additional fees for the service. You can get local SIMs to stay connected with your families and loved ones during the journey. Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell are two popular SIM cards in Nepal. They offer various call and data packages.

Langtang Valley Trek Difficulty

Langtang Valley Trek is a moderate venture suitable for all trekkers, including beginners. Any person with good health and fitness can join the trek. However, there are a few factors that make the trek a challenging venture. These include:

Rugged and Varied Trails

Langtang Valley takes you into the remote part of Nepal, and the trails are rugged and rough. The lower regions have well-developed trails, but the terrain becomes more rugged as you go higher. Likewise, the terrains are also diverse, which makes the journey more difficult. You have to trek on off-the-beaten trails that are poorly developed. You must navigate through narrow and steep ridges in some places. During the trek, you must hike on these rugged and rough trails on varied terrains for 5 to 7 hours on average.

High Altitude

Another factor that makes the Langtang Valley Trek difficult is the high altitude. You will gradually ascend your way up to an altitude of 4984 meters. The high altitude makes the trek more demanding. It is because the oxygen level in the atmosphere begins to decrease. The air pressure also reduces. The lack of oxygen makes it harder to breathe, making the climb more demanding. There is also the risk of altitude sickness. Many trekkers can experience mild to severe symptoms of altitude sickness. Therefore, it is crucial to acclimatize during the trek. The weather also becomes unpredictable at higher altitude areas. Trekkers must also prepare adequate equipment and gear.

Crowded On Peak Season

Langtang Valley Trek is relatively less crowded than other commercialized trekking routes in the country. However, it can be crowded during peak seasons. The trails are busier, and you will come across many fellow trekkers on the way. As a result, the accommodations and transportation are usually fully booked. You may also not be able to enjoy the serene trekking atmosphere. So, if you are trekking during peak season, be ready for busy trails. Similarly, you must also book accommodations in advance. For a more serene trekking experience, choose off-season time.

Tips For Preventing Altitude Sickness

In any trek above 2500 meters, there is the risk of altitude sickness due to a decreasing oxygen level in the atmosphere. You can prevent yourself from succumbing to altitude-related sickness in a few ways, which include:

  • Climb to a higher altitude gradually and acclimate. Proper acclimatization allows your body to adjust to higher altitudes.
  • Drink plenty of fluid and stay hydrated. Drink at least 4 to 5 liters of water while on trek.
  • For beginners, it is best to ascend only 100 m per day.
  • Eat a high-carb and nutritious diet during the trek.
  • Do not do heavy exercises at high altitudes. It dehydrates your body and makes breathing harder.
  • Avoid caffeine, chocolate, and alcoholic beverages. Also, avoid smoking during the trek.
  • Medications like Acetazolamide or Diamox help prevent altitude sickness. However, consult with a healthcare professional before taking them.

Lantang Village After Reconstruction

The 2015 Nepal earthquake caused devastating damage to the country. The Langtang Village was one of the parts of the country that was heavily affected by the earthquake. It destroyed not only the houses and heritage sites, but many also lost their lives. An estimated 310 people lost their lives in the Langtang Valley, of whom 176  were locals, 80 Nepalese, and 54 foreign trekkers.

To get back up from the effects of earthquakes, locals themselves played the most crucial role. Their resilience not only helped in the Langtang Village’s restoration but also in healing the trauma from the catastrophic effects. Various national and international support and aid also helped to recover Langtang Valley.

The physical structures like houses, lodges, schools, etc have been rebuilt. Now, the accommodations in the valley can accommodate over 500 tourists at once. Traditional stones and timber have been replaced with concrete. A few of the heritages and structures are still being rebuilt. The water and electricity have been restored, and the trails are completely safe for trekking. So, trekkers do not have to worry about the safety or the lingering effects of the 2015 earthquake. You can still see the remnants of old buildings and debris during the trek.

Private Vehicles

If traveling on local buses is not your cup of tea, you can choose private vehicles for more comfort and convenience. You can hire a private jeep or car to travel from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Small groups can hire a private vehicle and split the cost, making it cost-effective and comfortable. You can hire the jeep through travel or tour agencies.

A single jeep can accommodate around seven people at a time. It has spacious seating and air conditioning. Travelers can stop at places they prefer for refreshments or to enjoy the scenery. Private vehicles also take a similar route as the local bus. However, they are faster and take around 5 to 7 hours to reach Syabrubesi from Kathmandu. Traveling in a private vehicle allows travelers to avoid crowds and personalize their ride. It is a suitable option for those who want to travel comfortably.

Rugged Road

The rain also makes the roads muddy and slippery. Traveling on such a rugged road, especially on a public bus, is uncomfortable and takes longer. However, it is a scenic ride. You will pass by picturesque countryside, hills, valleys, rivers, and mountains. The bumpy ride is also a thrilling experience that shows a unique side of Nepal.

It can also cause the risk of injuries and accidents. So, it is crucial to pack light and smart for the journey. Hiring a porter makes the journey more comfortable and relaxing. The weight limit for a porter is usually between 20 to 25 kg. A single porter carries the luggage of two trekkers, so you should keep your luggage under 12 kg for the journey. Avoid packing unnecessary items, which can cause overpacking.

Seasonal Impact

Nepal experiences four seasons annually. The seasons play a huge role in the trekking experience. For the best and most comfortable trekking experience, choose peak season, i.e., spring and autumn. It is possible to trek during off-season, i.e., summer and winter. However, the weather conditions are challenging and extreme. It can also be dangerous to trek during off-season. Only experienced and seasoned trekkers with adequate preparation should join the trek at these times. Even when trekking in peak season, the weather at higher elevations is unpredictable. Hence, it is crucial to check the weather forecast even while trekking in the right season. Trekkers must prepare for all weather conditions and carry proper clothing and gear.
