Essential info for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Why Annapurna Base Camp Trek Stands Out

The Annapurna Base Camp is the second-most popular trek destination in Nepal. What makes it popular is not only the stunning mountain vistas. Its diverse trekking trails, stunning mountain views, and cultural experiences are among the major attractions. Here are some of the reasons why the trek stands out from the rest:

The Ultimate Himalayan Sunrise View From Poon Hill

Poon Hill Weather
Poon Hill

The first reason why you should take the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is that you will get a chance to enjoy the scenic sunrise and mountain views from the famous Poon Hill Viewpoint (3,120 m). The viewpoint is a short 1-hour hike from Ghorepani Village. It offers mesmerizing Himalayan views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, etc. Trekkers climb up to the viewpoint before dawn to experience the beautiful sunrise. The golden sun rises over the snow-capped mountains, painting them in shades of pink, orange, and gold. It is truly a memorable moment, and the photographs love the Poon Hill viewpoint.

Jhinu Danda’s Soothing Natural Hot Spring

Another reason to take the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is to dip in the natural hot spring at Jhinu Danda. The hot spring is believed to have healing properties. It relaxes your tired muscles and offers a rejuvenating experience. Moreover, stunning scenery surrounds the hot spring. The hot spring lies right next to the Modi River. Therefore, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere by listening to the sound of the flowing river. Jhinu Dada is the last stop of the Annapurna Base Camp. There is no other way to finish this incredible journey than with a dip in a relaxing hot spring.

Pokhara: The city of lights

View of pokhara valley
View Of Pokhara Valley

The beautiful city of Pokhara is the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The Lakeside area, near Phewa Lake, is a popular tourist hub in Nepal. There are numerous shops, bars, and eateries in the surrounding area. The shops and streets are decorated with lights. Moreover, they come alive at night with live music and cultural programs. The lights from the lakeside reflect on the Phewa Lake, resembling floating lights. Hence, it has earned the name “The City of Lights.”

There are so many things that you can do in Pokhara. You can go boating on the Phews Lake, watch sunrise and sunset from viewpoints like Sarangkot and Peace Pagoda, and visit other attractions such as Begnas Lake, Rupa Lake, Davis Falls, Gupteshwor Cave, Tal Barahi Temple, Bindhyabasini Temple, etc. You can also participate in adventurous activities like paragliding, bungee jumping, ultralight flights, etc. No wonder Pokhara City is a top tourist hub.

Unmatched Views of Annapurna I and Machhapuchhr

annapurna range
Annapurna Range

The stunning panoramas are undoubtedly one of the reasons why the Annapurna Base Camp Trek stands out. It is an opportunity to witness the spectacular Annapurna range. The range is named after the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment, Goddess Annapurna. The key peaks that you witness during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek are Annapurna I (8901 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Annapurna II (7937 m), Annapurna III (7555 m), and Annapurna IV (7455 m). You can also witness Machhapuchre (6993 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), Gangapurna (7455 m), Lamjung Himal (6983 m), Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Nilgiri (7061 m), and many more. The mountains look even more magical during sunrises and sunsets.

Himalayan Wildlife Sightings in the Annapurna Conservation Area

The trekking trails of Annapurna Base Camp and the entire Annapurna range lie within the Annapurna Conservation Area. It is the largest protected area of the country, covering 7629 sq km. It is inhabited by diverse species of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species. Over 1,200 plant species are found here. Likewise, many mammals (red panda, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, etc.), reptiles, amphibians, and over 450 species of birds inhabit the conservation area. The conservation area has been playing a crucial role in preserving the biodiversity and ecosystems of the region. During the trek, you will get a chance to witness many of the diverse flora and fauna. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of rare wildlife.

Rich Cultural Discovery on the Annapurna Trail

The Annapurna region is home to Gurung and Magar ethnic communities. They are indigenous groups who have unique cultures, traditions, and customs. While on the Annapurna Base Camp journey, you will cross several villages with traditional houses and terrace farms. You can see traditional stone houses, prayer flags, monasteries, and chortens. Similarly, you will stay in teahouses in popular settlements such as Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, Chhomrong, and more. You will get a glimpse of their culture and lifestyle. Many local teahouses host cultural programs to entertain their guests. This way, you can immerse yourself in their culture and gain insights into their rich history. It is also a chance to experience the warm hospitality of the Himalayas.

Accommodation, Food and Facilities in Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Along the trek to Annapurna Base Camp, trekkers get accommodation, food, and other facilities in locally run tea houses and small lodges. Even if you’re a first-time trekker, you can feel confident knowing that you’ll experience comfort and hospitality throughout the adventure. Likewise, no matter how high you move in the trek, you can expect warmth, hearty food, and a friendly atmosphere to make your trek to ABC worry-free.

What to Expect from Teahouses and Lodges

Regarding accommodation, teahouses and lodges on the Annapurna Base Camp trek are simple, cozy, and social places. Teahouses are family-run wooden or stone buildings with a central dining room, views of the surrounding hills and mountains, and guest rooms. At most teahouses, rooms are usually twin-share with wooden beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Still, we suggest you bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth and comfort.

While the lower areas, like Ghandruk, Chhomrong, and Jhinu Danda, have rooms with attached bathrooms and hot showers, don’t expect such facilities at higher elevations. Room prices are budget-friendly, that cost about USD 5-10 per night at lower elevations and increasing slightly at higher elevations. Moreover, most teahouses are run by local families, including Gurungs and Magars; you can chat with them, learn about village life, and taste regional dishes.

Meal Options and Local Cuisine on the Trek

Along with accommodation, food availability on the ABC trek is excellent. Every teahouse along the trek offers a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Foods are designed to keep trekkers energized, featuring a mix of local Nepali dishes and basic Western comfort food. Likewise, Portions are typically large by trekking standards.

dal bhat tarkari

Typical Nepali trekking staples like dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables), noodles, soups, momos (dumplings), and fried potatoes are common options for getting energy along the way. However, some lodges also serve simple Western and international dishes such as pasta, pancakes, toast, and omelets in larger villages like Chhomrong and around the base camp. In addition, meals are served in warm communal dining rooms where trekkers sit together at long tables with trekkers from all around the world. Thus, the dining time is also an opportunity to connect with different people and build friendships if you are interested.

Internet, Mobile, and Communication Facilities

Trekkers on the Annapurna Base Camp Journey can expect reasonably good mobile coverage with their SIMs for internet and communication. Likewise, they can get paid Wi‑Fi in most teahouses and access to enough electricity to keep essential devices charged. Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell are the two main providers on the route to ABC, and both work well in lower areas like Pokhara, Nayapul, Ghandruk, and up towards Chhomrong. As the altitude increases, NTC generally maintains better reach than Ncell.

Permits, Documentation & Safety

For the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, trekkers need a specific permit in addition to basic travel documents. With the right paperwork, insurance, and awareness of altitude and trail conditions, the trek is safe and manageable even for beginners.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit is required for the trek to Annapurna Base Camp. TIMS was also necessary, but under the new rules regarding permits, it is no longer required. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes place within the conservation area. Hence, you will need a permit to access the region. You have to pay a certain amount to obtain the permit. Moreover, the cost varies for SAARC nationals and non-SAARC nationals. The cost of ACAP is as follows:

                        Nationality

                    Cost (per person)

SAARC National NPR 1,000
Other Foreigners NPR 3,000

The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna and diverse ecosystems. Likewise, it is one of Nepal’s largest conservation areas. The conservation project aims to protect the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Annapurna region. And the funds obtained by the permit also go for the area’s development.

Visa and Other Essentials

All foreign travelers, except Indian nationals, will need a Nepal entry visa to travel and trek in Nepal. You can get a visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Similarly, you can also get a visa from land borders with India and China. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure, and you must provide a passport-size photo for the visa.

The visa fees will vary depending on the duration of your stay in Nepal. You can get a single- or multiple-entry visa, depending on your requirements. The costs are as follows:

                            Cost

Challenges and Tips for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Annapurna Base Camp is a moderately difficult trek suitable for trekkers of all levels. However, it presents its own set of challenges that make it quite difficult. They are as follows:

Altitude and Weather

The Annapurna Base Camp sits at an altitude of 4,130 m / 13,549 ft. It is also the highest point of the trek. During the 13-day trek, you will go from the low altitude of Pokhara at 822 m/ 2,696 ft to 4,130 m / 13,549 ft. Due to the high altitude, there is a risk for trekkers experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness. The oxygen level in the atmosphere begins to get thinner above 2,500 m / 8,202 ft. There is also a decrease in air pressure.

weather challenge at annapurna

As a result, trekkers may experience various altitude-related symptoms, such as nausea, headaches, extreme fatigue, and shortness of breath. The best way to minimize the risk is to take acclimatization days and gradually ascend to a high altitude. As you ascend, the climb becomes more strenuous. Due to the lack of oxygen, trekkers can quickly lose their breath. Hence, trekkers must be aware of the high altitude during the ABC Trek.

The unpredictable weather conditions are another challenge that makes the Annapurna Base Camp Trek difficult. Despite the season, the weather in higher-altitude regions can change at any time. The higher you go, the more unpredictable the weather becomes. As a result, trekkers may come across unforeseen challenges, such as sudden rain showers, high winds, a drop in temperature, etc. Trekkers must prepare adequate clothing and gear to handle sudden weather changes during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Trail Terrain and Conditions

During the 13-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you will have to trek through varied landscapes. The trek begins with a gentle ascent through lush subtropical forests of rhododendrons, oaks, firs, and breech. Similarly, you will have to ascend and descend on stone staircases. While on trek, you will climb more than 3000 stone staircases.

Mt. Annapurna

The trek gradually becomes more challenging as you must climb steeply along rough, narrow, rocky pathways. As you move to higher altitudes, the dense forest changes into alpine meadows and highland pastures. The landscape starts to become barren as you get closer to Annapurna Sanctuary. Moreover, you must trek past rocky fields and some icy trails to get to the Annapurna Base Camp.

Health Safety and Emergency Tips

If you are going to trek Annapurna Base Camp, it is necessary to get a health check before starting the journey, especially if you have heart, breathing, or joint problems. Your doctor can consult you whether the trek suit your body and assess fitness for altitude, adjust medications, and advise on altitude sickness prevention and treatment. Besides, we suggest you to carry a small first-aid kit, with your regular medicines, altitude sickness tablets recommended by a doctor, and basic hygiene items.

In an emergency, ask your guide for help as they can provide basic care, call rescue services, and direct you to evacuation points if symptoms become serious. Likewise, maintain communication through charged phones, local SIM cards where coverage exists, or trekking guides who carry radios or satellite communication. For personal safety, we suggest you not to walk alone and inform your guide immediately about any health change such as chest tightness, headache, or breathlessness. Also, respect local rules, stay on designated paths, manage waste properly, and follow environmental guidelines.

How to Prepare Physically Mentally and with Gear

By training your body, preparing your mind, and choosing the right gear is how you can have a good preparation for Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Solo vs Group Trek

Solo Trekking on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is like a journey of freedom. While trekking completely alone with no one on your side is not possible due to a new rule implemented in April 2023, which requires hiring a licensed guide for trekking in Nepal. Because of this, what used to be “solo trekking” has effectively become “private guided trekking.”

Solo trek means you’ll choose your own pace, when to stop for photos, tea, or rest, and you can change your daily plan by consulting with your guide. Solo trekking also feels more personal and quiet, which is great for thinking, enjoying nature, and focusing on photography or writing.

On the other hand, the Annapurna Base Camp group trek is more social and supported. In a group trek, the journey will be affordable as you’ll share the cost of the guide, porter, and other expenses. In a group, the pace is set together, decisions are made as a team, and you always have people to talk to, share views with, and celebrate the journey, which will be motivating and fun. In addition, the group trek helps avoid feelings of isolation during the trek.

langtang yala peak gosaikunda trek Langtang, Yala peak, Gosaikunda trek.

Langtang Valley Trek Adventure In April 2026 we went trekking in the Langtang Valley and towards Yala peak with Core Trek Pvt Ltd. The trek was very well thought out and organised. We were new to trekking and walking at altitude and the planning of transfers, days, walking distances and altitudes was well designed by Coretreks staff. After arriving and spending one night in Kathmandu we departed on a private jeep trip to Syabrubesi. We were accompanied by Trekking Guide Dibash Pudasaini and Porter Pukar Bhatta, two very friendly Nepalese with good English. From Syabrubesi we walked in three days up the Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa, with overnights in Lama Hotel and Langtang Village. On the next two acclimatisation days we walked to Kyanjin Ri and upstream along the Langtang River through the glacial outwash plains towards the direction of Langshiska Kharka. The following day we went with the mountain guide Jhandu Lama and Dibash to the Yala Base Camp, where we hit snow on the last 500m before the small base hut. We crawled into the sleeping backs early, then got up at 2:30 am for an alpine start to the day and went with crampons and headlights uphill on the frozen snow surface. Our pace got slower and slower until we reached the flat area on ice 120m below Yala peak around 7:30 am. The view now opened towards the east and was amazing. At this altitude of 5400m we had reached our limit of breathing enough air in and decided to descend. No altitude sickness. We stopped on the way down briefly at the basecamp and then continued down to Kyanjin Gompa. Next day we did a long downhill walk to Lama Hotel, then a half day walk to Syabrubesi where the private jeep waited to bring us back to Kathmandu. On the trek we saw wild monkeys, deer, tahr, eagles, lammergeier and many other birds. Time in Kathmandu was spend sightseeing, shopping and relaxing with nice food and beverages. Our guides from Coretreks brought us out to a fantastic dinner with great Nepalese food and traditional dancing. We can highly recommend Coretreks and their guides for trekking and peak climbing, they are very knowledgeable about trekking, geography and wildlife. They are friendly and communicate well which is important on treks that can get exhausting and tiring at times. The nice hotels, teahouses, food, supplies, sightseeing, jeeps and airport taxis were well organised by Coretreks and gave us a unique experience in Nepal.

More than a trek – My Annapurna Circuit Experience The "Annapurna Circuit Trek including Tilicho Lake" journey was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. The 15-day tour starting and ending in Kathmandu was definitely challenging — many steep ascents in a short amount of time, icy sections, and the thin air at high altitude push you physically and mentally. At the same time, every single day rewards you with unforgettable impressions and breathtaking scenery. I especially want to highlight the outstanding organization by CoreTrek. Even before the trek started, communication was excellent. Individual requests were handled quickly, flexibly, and in a very solution-oriented way. I always felt honestly advised about what was realistic and what was not, which created a lot of trust from the beginning. On the trek itself, my guide Aga Kami and my porter Sudip were absolutely fantastic. Both were incredibly friendly, supportive, experienced, and attentive throughout the entire journey. In such demanding conditions at high altitude, having people like them around gives you a huge sense of confidence and security. Aga Kami guided the route perfectly, always knew how to adapt the pace to the situation, and shared his experience in a calm and professional way. Sudip also did an amazing job and made every day more enjoyable with his positive attitude and constant support. The trek would not have been the same without them. The absolute highlight was crossing the Thorong La Pass. It is one of those moments that feels surreal — a combination of exhaustion, pride, and overwhelming beauty that is difficult to describe in words. In general, the scenery throughout the trek was simply spectacular. I was there in November and had perfect weather the entire time: deep blue skies, crystal-clear visibility, sunshine, and only light winds. This season is ideal for the Annapurna region because the air is dry and stable, creating stunning panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks almost every day. Another big surprise was the food and accommodation situation. Even in remote mountain villages, the variety and quality of the food were far better than I expected. I was also surprised by how widely available internet access was throughout the trek. Of course, the lodges become more basic and rustic the higher you go, but considering the environment and altitude, they were still surprisingly comfortable. Honestly, there was nothing during the trek that really disappointed or bothered me. Looking back, what remains most is the feeling afterward: pride, gratitude, and inner peace. Some experiences take weeks or even months to fully process and appreciate. For me, this trek was not only a physical adventure but also a mental reset. I was able to completely disconnect, clear my mind, and reconnect with myself. I would highly recommend this trek to adventurous and physically active travelers looking for an authentic, challenging, and deeply rewarding experience.

THANK YOU CORETREKS ! When it comes to chose a trekking compagny, it's a roll of dice. Choosing Coretreks was such a blessing! Human oriented compagny! They gave me different trek options and I was glad because I ended going for something different than my first idea was and I am so happy with it. The prices are good too. I decided to go with Everest Base Camp, Island Peak and Ama Dablam summits for a total of around 1 month trip. I felt very safe with the trek and climbing guide and had fast answer from owners when I had questions. Honestly, everything was better than expected, I recommand Coretreks to everyone! I will come back FOR SURE! They make your dreams come true, don't wait!🙏🏼
