Trek Permit
The trek is in the Everest Region. Thus, while trekking through this region, you will pass through different areas and restricted places. Thus, getting permits is necessary. But what permits do we need while trekking to Ama Dablam? We need two different types of trekking permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. You can get these permits from the Tourism Board in Kathmandu or at the entry gate of Sagarmatha National Park in Monjo.
Sagarmatha National Park Permit:
Getting this permit is necessary as the trial passed through Sagarmatha National Park. This permits ensures safe and sound travel without harming the surrounding areas. The pass costs NPR 1500 for SAARC nationals, NPR 3000 for foreigners, and NPR 200 for locals of Nepal.
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
This permit is necessary to explore the restricted places in the surrounding areas. Without getting this permit, you cannot enter the listed restricted places. You cannot get these permits alone; you require an experienced trek guide from a registered travel agency. The cost of these permits is the same for each individual, i.e., NPR 2000 per person.
Transportation
When trekking to Ama Dablam’s base camp, you will have different transportation options. You can choose from various means based on your convenience and budget. We generally offer three transportation modes when booking our 12-day Ama Dablam Base Camp trek. Here is a list of the transportation we offer if you are trekking to Ama Dablam with us.
Flights from Kathmandu To Lukla

One of the most popular and quickest ways to reach the starting point of the trek is by flight. The flight takes off from Tribhuvan Airport. Many people choose this route, as it is the most convenient. The flight takes around 30 to 45 minutes to reach Lukla. It offers bird-eye views of the diverse landscapes and snow-capped mountains.
Helicopter Service

The next option includes taking a helicopter ride. Also considered the safest than flights, helicopter service can be quite expensive compared to other types of flights. You can choose a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla or even directly to a higher point like Namche Bazaar. The time generally depends on which landing stop[ you choose. However, if you consider Lukla a landing point, you can reach it in about 30 minutes.
Overland to Jiri and Trek to Lukla
Alternatively, if you seek an extended trekking experience, you can take a bus or jeep to Jiri or Salleri and then trek to Lukla. It is one of the cheapest means you can choose. However, it requires long driving hours, about 7 to 8 hours, and a long first-day hike of 2 to 3 hours. Thus, adding several days to your journey offers a gradual acclimatization process.
Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek Additional Information
Best Time For 11 Days Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek
The best times for the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (August to November). These seasons offer the most favorable weather conditions and the clearest views of the mountains. However, the weather and temperature vary slightly depending on the altitude. The mountain weather is notorious for being unpredictable and changing rapidly. Hence, it is essential to choose the right time for the base camp trek to Ama Dablam.
Spring (March to May)
The spring season has one of the best climatic conditions with warm temperatures and clear skies. Spring breaks the chain of cold winter, and the snow at higher elevations begins to melt. You can see clear views of the dramatic mountain peaks, including Ama Dablam, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kangtega, Thamserku, and more.
The forest and vegetation of the Everest region are also thriving with life. Hence, you can witness the hillsides of lower elevation colored with blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and other wildflowers. The daytime temperature ranges from 12 to 18°C, while the nighttime temperature at higher altitudes ranges from -5 to -10°C.
Autumn (August to November)
Autumn is the best and peak trekking season with the most favorable weather and moderate temperature. Since the season comes right after monsoon, the post-monsoon weather offers excellent clarity. The crisp and clear skies of the Everest region offer the best views of the surrounding mountains. Similarly, the vegetation looks fresh and lush. The trail is also dry with minimal risk of landslides and mudslides.
In addition to the stable weather, autumn is a festive season. The biggest festival of the Everest region, Mani Rimdu, is held at Tengboche Monastery during this time of the year. So, it is the perfect time for Ama Dablam Trekking as well as immersing in the local culture. The average daytime temperature at lower altitudes is around 10°C to 15°C. However, the temperature at the base camp is slightly lower and drops below -5 °C at night.
Unfavorable Season of the Year
The unfavorable seasons for the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek are summer and winter. During the summer months (June to August), the monsoon brings heavy rains. It makes the trails slippery and prone to landslides while obscuring mountain views with clouds and mist. The lack of visibility often causes flight delays and cancellations.
In winter (December to February), the region experiences harsh cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing in higher-altitude areas. The snow makes the trails at higher elevations difficult and sometimes impassable. So, trekkers may need technical gear for trekking. Additionally, there is also a high risk of avalanches. These extreme weather conditions can pose serious challenges and dangers to trekkers. Many teahouses may also close their business for the winter.
Due to the unstable and extreme climatic conditions, summer and winter are considered off-season for trekking. They are unfavorable seasons for Ama Dablam Trekking.
Accommodation and Meals
The moderate trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp takes you to the base of Mt. Ama Dablam, which is 6,812 meters high and has a highest elevation of 4,800 meters. You will stay in a tea house or lodge for the journey. Tea houses/lodges are popular overnight camps for entering Nepal’s Himalayas. These are standard tourist rooms with mattresses, bed linens, pillows, blankets, tea tables, and two single beds. Normally, the bathroom and toilet are separate spaces inside the room.
Certain lodges have attached restrooms, but they are typically located lower up. On the other hand, lodges will have a communal bathroom that must be used on each floor. In addition, there will be a bathroom and a toilet on the compound outside the hotel building.
The food is professional chefs’ standard dishes. Trekkers’ menu will include Nepali, Chinese, continental, Italian, Indian, and other food options. Food is always prepared fresh according to the hikers’ preferences so that it could take longer. Dinner is ordered roughly two to three hours before bedtime, breakfast before bed, and lunch while trekking. Thus, be ready to wait until at least 20 minutes after placing your lunch order. This holds for foods that require a lot of cooking time.
Health and Fitness Level
Being healthy and fit is one of the major requisites of trekking to Ama Dablam. The continuous uphill and downhill and high altitude are the major reasons why having a cardiovascular foundation is crucial. Going for regular aerobic exercise such as running, cycling, or summing for several months before the trek can help build the necessary endurance. Additionally, strength training for the legs, core, and upper body will help manage the physical demands of the trek.
Good health and proper acclimatization to the altitude are crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. You should be free from any chronic conditions. It is very important to acclimatize gradually to avoid altitude sickness. It allows your body to adjust by following recommended acclimatization schedules and staying hydrated. Besides being physically fit, you also need to be mentally strong to encounter all the upcoming obstacles in the trekking.
A typical day on the trek
We start our trekking early in the morning. We wake up around 6 to 7 a.m. and enjoy breakfast, preparing ourselves for the day’s hike. After packing up and checking our trekking gear, we start the trek around 8 a.m. The morning then involves several hours of walking through uphill and downhill sections. You will pass through villages, forests, and suspension bridges.

Around midway, we will stop for lunch at a teahouse or a designated rest spot. After a break, we continue our trek, facing the challenging terrain as the day progresses. We will reach our nest teahouse or campsites by late afternoon, usually between 3 to 4 p.m. Then, we will settle in and take a good time to relax and adjust to the changing altitude. Staying there, we can explore the local area or interact with fellow trekkers.
We will have dinner and some leisure time in the evening to end the day. We can spend the rest of the evening playing cards, reading books, or simply enjoying the beautiful mountain views. As the night falls, we will head to bed early to rest and recharge for the next day’s journey. This is the regular day of our trekking. However, each day offers us with different scenic nature views.
Communication, Electricity during the Trek
Communication and electricity are somewhat limited but manageable during the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek. In most villages along the trek, we can find Wi-Fi services in teahouses. However, they may be slow and sometimes require an extra fee. Mobile network coverage is available in certain areas, particularly closer to major villages like Namche Bazaar. Still, it can be inconsistent and unreliable in more remote sections.
Electricity is available in most teahouses, but it’s often limited and may come with additional costs for charging devices. However, bringing portable power banks and spare batteries is wise to ensure our devices remain charged throughout the trek. Additionally, conserving battery life by turning off non-essential apps and using devices sparingly can help manage the limited electricity access.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is like a safety net for your adventure. This policy can help you financially against unexpected events while traveling. If you are trekking to Ama Dablam, we recommend you have travel insurance. It can cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations or interruptions, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation. Since trekking involves high risk, having the right insurance is necessary.
While taking insurance, read and understand what your travel insurance policy covers carefully. Some policies may have specific exclusions, so read them carefully. It’s also a good idea to carry a copy of your insurance documents and emergency contact information with you during the trek. With the right travel insurance, you can focus on enjoying the journey to Ama Dablam Base Camp.

I didn’t have much time to prepare in detail, and I wasn’t sure about the weather, so I left everything to the last minute. In the end, everything turned out great! Before the trip, I met with Neem, who helped me buy an eSIM (though Ncell doesn’t work as well in the mountains as Namaste). It’s not as easy to get one in Kathmandu as you might think!I also had a wonderful guide, Bhim, who took care of everything for me, so I didn’t have to worry about a thing. He even bought fruit for me, knowing better which ones were ripe. The choice of teahouses wasn’t fixed in advance, and it was nice that he let me decide — although, even then, I preferred to rely on his experience. In short, the trip was a success, and I truly recommend this company and these people.Agi from UK.Posted on Katarzyna SVerified Amazing experience We would like to thank you very much for organizing a wonderful trip.
